Can they protect the entire world's shipping routes? Because that's a job the US actually does, while asking nothing in return. I don't even know if most people in Europe realize that.

We used to. Not so much anymore. We have a carrier-heavy fleet now. Patrolling the oceans requires something like 600 destroyers and we're down to 70.

Europe doesn't even have the natural resources to build up a military across the entire continent, much less protect their shipping routes.
It would take them 30-40 yrs at best, and buying unfathomable amounts of steel, oil, gas, minerals and rare earth elements from Russia to even get close to the US Military force, much less the Chinese or Russian forces that both have 30-70 yr headstarts on them.
