Ya'll do realize that steel doesn't have to be hot enough to melt in order to fail, right? Steel gets more flexible the more you heat it. In a building, if they get heated enough, the steel holding up the building will buckle and the building will collapse. That's why steel members in parking garages are covered in fireproofing. It's because car fuel fires burn hot enough to weaken the steel enough for it to fail. Fireproofing burns to block the heat from the steel long enough to hopefully get everyone out of the building or put out the fire.
The fire storm created by burning jet fuel and office supplies burning for as long as it did was more than enough to cause the steel to sufficiently weaken and buckle under the weight of the floors above.
