100% agree. Which is why I have made a financial sacrifice to homeschool my kids.

I like the idea of a choice and all.
We home-schooled our children.
How about if they quit collecting the 10-15,000 tax for education instead of taking it and "gifting" part of it back to us under conditions?

But I'll bet all of you who oppose school vouchers love the idea of us taxpayers paying off your student loan!

No I actually paid for my school through my service to this great country as part of the USMC.

Would also be a good way to destroy some good private schools
Not if those schools simply have academic requirements that must be met.

You apparently dont know anything about school choice. This is putting choice back in the parents hands.
By saying you get to take the $8,000 of state tax money for your kid and decide which school it goes to, the parents have all the power.
You can take your kid out of a crappy school and put them in a better performing on or one that caters to their interests.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
I pay tuition gladly so I don’t have the same problems at the public schools. I’m not in support of importing the problems.

But most people aren’t paying anywhere near $8k in property taxes. Let alone school taxes.
I checked my EBR school taxes. $1.3k per year.

What does what LA residents are paying have to do with a Texas proposal?
Because in the OP:

Just as with colleges, they would then raise the cost of private school up by $8,000.
There would be two reasons for this with some overlap:
1 - a money grab to get as much money flowing in as possible.
2 - to make sure that only the people they want enrolled will be enrolled, due to achademics or other more nefarious reasons.
School choice that allows kids to move from a poorer grading school to a better grading school is good...giving money to it is bad.

Kids should have the choice to go to Metairie Park Country Day School, Newman, Jesuit, Episcopal Baton Rouge, Episcopal of Acadiana, and other top schools.
I’m not sure why this generation believes they are entitled to handouts for the sake of equity.

Some of you are calling this a handout and welfare. If it is welfare and handouts would that not make public education itself a handout and welfare? Why does the fact that it is going to private institutions make it more welfare-like than if it goes to a public institution?

I think the concern some folks have is that it will put low income kids into private schools.
In Arkansas, the private schools aren't really expanding yet. Most of them will raise tuition by a couple thousand per year, and wind up with a similar demographic and enrollment.
The people sending their kids to privates already will just get most of it paid for by their taxes, instead of none.

The government is giving you money(even if it’s “yours”) to pay for something you can not currently afford. That is a handout.

I am 100% for school choice. The way I see it, it cannot be any worse than the direction the current education system is headed. I see a lot of great potential if educators are able to focus on education and held accountable for educating kids.
I think many people are not able to separate the existing public school system from a new system where the ISDs are no longer in full control of schooling. As soon as parents have control of the education dollars allocated to their kids it is going to flip the existing public school administration on its side.
The ISDs will have to compete for students and compete for teachers. When you add fair competition to education it's going to be a much, much better system and much more transparent. It will end the top heavy ISDs collecting large salaries to hand out large vendor contracts. It will force ISD administrators and school boards to make decisions based on education.
School choice can solve public school overcrowding. Instead of forcing 30+ kids in a classroom with one teacher designed for 20 students, the new system can organically level out student population for the designed enrollment of the facilities.
Teacher will have choices. This will force public schools to start cleaning up the in school chaos the administrations create for teachers.
Parents of special needs will really see the benefits for their kids. They will be able to choose a school that may better specialize for their kids needs than the current public school.
It's possible you may see some creative public/private partnerships come out of this that is impossible in the current dinosaur, monopolistic education model.

Exactly. People are in here saying a voucher system is bad. Compared to what? They act like the current system is some education utopia worthy of our protection.

So what if that "better performing school" that you moved for gets a woke principal and starts teaching your kids something you dont believe in. Are you going to move again?

OMG how dare we give a low income kid a good education. They should go to the schools in the project. Little Bobby or Mary Kate might get beat out in sports and not be the best anymore.
