Have you spent any time in the middle east? You're just throwing shite against the wall hoping for something to stick.
I lived in the Middle East, without interruption, from May of 2012 - March of 2014.

Which part? (honestly interested, I'm there often)
And do you really think its comparable to previous war deals?
What I think really happened is the president has been shopping these guys for a while trying to close down GITMO. So this is probably a win in his eyes as he was giving these guys away anyways. Qatar is an interesting country. On the face, they are less strict than Saudi but they're security forces are very poor. They try to hold themselves as the face of islam. I think that's why they haven't had the issues they likely would have otherwise. And as others mentioned their attempt to be neutral in the war against radical islamic terrorists.

I have a friend who did a couple of tours in Afghanistan and he's pissed off that the American POW was released. He and his friends seem to think he was a traitor who deserved to die.

Please point them out, Colonel. I didn't leave the CENTCOM AOR in that 22 month period. Not once. In fact, I never left the GCC aside from a stint in Amman.

That's a separate matter. I honestly don't know what all this kid did and didn't say. It'll be investigated from the moment of his debriefing (now) until whenever.

Yeah.

Yeah I obviously don't know what happened, but he's furious. Left the baseball game earlier when he found out.

Well Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia killed 150x as many people as raghead extremists. If we had such a label back then, we probably would have applied it. I guess we just settled for genocidists, communists, and evil imperialists.
And how many German generals did we exchange for an elisted man? I'll give you a hint, the number starts with the letter 'z'.

A German general does not equal a Taliban official with no official ties to AQ (okay, that last part is kind of a joke). Pakistani officials are just about as juiced in with AQ as these five assholes. I wish we killed them all, but that's not reality.
We gave many "dispensations" to get German scientists of value (with Nazi ties) through the Russian lines.

Oskar Schindler was a Nazi, too. Just because they were Nazis doesn't mean they were evil incarnate.
There's a difference between giving a dispensation to a German scientist who aided his country in a time of war, and a Taliban general who helped plan the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

This deal has been on-again , off-again for quite a while. It could have been completed almost 22 months ago:
"The Obama administration, in a move aimed at reviving Afghan peace talks, has sweetened a proposed deal under which it would transfer Taliban detainees from Guantanamo Bay prison in exchange for a U.S. soldier held by Taliban allies in Pakistan.
The revised proposal, a concession from an earlier U.S. offer, would alter the sequence of the move of five senior Taliban figures held for years at the U.S. military prison to the Gulf state of Qatar, sources familiar with the issue said."
"The revised proposal would send all five Taliban prisoners to Qatar first, said sources who spoke on condition of anonymity. Only then would the Taliban be required to release Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, the only U.S. prisoner of war."

So is it true there is only a one year travel ban for the detainees? Then they are scott free?
Posted on 5/31/14 at 6:36 pm to NHTIGER
It didn't happen previously, because it had to be authorized by Congress. That changed in the last defense bill for 2014. It appears they were supposed to be notified 30 days in advance of any released detainees, but it seems that didn't happen here and they were notified while it was in progress.

If only Obama would be more like Reagan and illegally trade hostages for arms by supplying over 2500 missiles to Iran you guys wouldn't complain. Damn Obama for not being as stupid as Reagan!
