What evidence of abuse do you have? You think the VA is wrongfully giving Disability Ratings?
Hoo boy. I’m 100% VA disabled now. It only took me 35 years to get to 100% tho. Started off at 10%, then 30%, then 50%, then 70%. Finally started to receive 100% in April 2024. During my 35 year wait, the most time I spent waiting was when I was receiving 30% (17 years), followed by 10% (12 years). My rating started going up once I turned 55 years old. I can’t speak for other states, but SC regional office puts you through hoop after hoop to even 10%!
Long story short. I would give every penny back if I could have healthy knees again (I can’t even jog anymore). I wish my tailbone had a normal curve again. I wish I didn’t receive an experimental hypertension drug that messed up my mind to the point that I almost committed suicide twice (1988 and 1989).
But hey, we’re scamming the system. My father was a Air Force veteran who’s service and medical records were destroyed in the St Louis warehouse fire. He had legit injuries while in service but the VA always denied him because his records were destroyed. No proof. So spare me about POS’s gaming the system. That’s why the VA has a FWA division for the scammers.
Last but not least. My uncle was a Navy senior chief. The day I enlisted, he told me to keep my OWN copy of my medical records. My copy has saved my bacon many many times when dealing with the VA, ESPECIALLY my psychiatric records. It was the only proof of the drug I was given for my hypertension.

Most states have disabled Veteran plates, but if they don't have the wheelchair logo they can't park in handicapped spots.

Military members cannot sue their employer for damages. If the things they had happen to them in the military, happened to them in the civilian world, violating OSHA and a myriad of other federal laws, they could recover damages for the negligence of the company in placing them in hazardous conditions. VA disability is like a prenuptual. Instead of suing, they pre-determine what rating you get if you get gut shot, or an arm blown off, or hearing damage from explosions and rifle fire. It is not disability in the sense that they cannot still work. It is compensation for each injury sustained which may affect quality of life.
This is completely irrelevant. We’re talking about vets who get disability WITHOUT having an actual disability. It’s called fraud.

How else are you going to have an all volunteer force the size of ours?
Exactly
There’s a lot of dumb posts in this thread. To recruit against civilian jobs you have to offer more things because military is less pay. One is retirement incentive. Two is medical/dental. Three is knowing military will likely tax your body/mind unlike anything in civilian life.
You are unable to put money into 401k because IRS considers your future retirement as your plan. So military loses out on that unless they changed laws.
You will move often and thus can’t have hobbies which collect things because military will only move so much weight.
You can’t accumulate a house nest egg because you move so often.
There are so many things military is disadvantaged in and to recruit they have a dwindling list of enticements.

Worth looking into and tightening up the bullshite.
I know one vet who had high paying jobs at Fortune 500 companies for years and years, got laid off, and then all of a sudden applied for disability benefits.

Thats a fricking crime, imo. I'm telling you, they arent disabled. Now they all use ptsd, etc
And they all know the scam, and i would guess 75% arent truly disabled
VA Disability doesn't have an income 'threshold' to worry about, you're just lying

Air force requires you to do this? I don't think it does.
The Air Force by and large is not carrying packs while running or doing ruck marches.
They are exposed to hydrozene (sp) and AFFF, and any number of carcinogenic materials on the flight line.
You also can’t compare it to civilian jobs… 72 hours anywhere in the world at a moments notice— how many other jobs live under this reality? Stop your life and leave. It’s what we signed up for yes, but it does take its toll.

VA disability ratings are not the same as regular disability. You only get a percentage of what you have. tinnitus is 10% its like $180 a month. Clearly not enough to live on. The reason VA ratings have went up is because of the PACT act where they had burn pits on the bases in the ME and we breathed in toxic chemicals all day. The process to even get a rating is long and frustrating. Are there people that scam, sure. I have heard of guys claimimg PTSD and getting 100% and never deployed. They were medically discharged for PTSD 6 months into their first assignment and yes that is complete bs.

40% ? It should be closer to 80%. Their lives were forever changed.

Yes there is. It’s called TDIU. There are 2 types. Schedular and TDIU. Schedular allows you to work while TDIU monitors income and you can lose or have your benefits reduced.

Nope....and neither does the military. Post where this is a requirement for the regular enlisted, the ones claiming disability....go ahead post it.
I would like someone in the military to thank me for my service for paying my taxes for their fake disability

You’ll get downvoted into oblivion, but reform is needed.
I would like to see the breakdown numbers of those 40% that are also working and/or also receiving SSDI.

Exactly. I do not know anyone getting over 50% for sleep apnea. Also its not figured the same way If you have 50% and get an added 10% you do not get 60%. You are still at 50%.

quote:TDIU is a narrow exception and covers maybe 5% of veterans receiving disability compensation, so roughly 95% have no employment-income threshold at all.
Yes there is. It’s called TDIU. There are 2 types. Schedular and TDIU. Schedular allows you to work while TDIU monitors income and you can lose or have your benefits reduced.
Even TDIU is not means-tested in the usual sense. It looks at whether the veteran can maintain substantially gainful employment. It does not count savings, investments, a spouse’s income, assets, or overall household wealth.
So it would be accurate to say that a very small minority of recipients have employment restrictions tied to TDIU, not that VA disability generally has an income threshold.

Very few Veterans get TDIU, I know one guy and he's partially paralyzed
But for Disability Payments the absolute vast majority have no income threshold to worry about
