Mandate a 32 hour work week instead of a 40 hour work week with no reduction in pay.

That's 32 more hours than you've ever worked in a week. Think you could handle it?

I like the idea myself. There is some good reading on productivity and the statistics that break down the average 40 hours in the week and how they are typically utilized.

The most productive countries researched had lower workweek hour averages.

Our economy is built on many different jobs/careers. Lumping office workers who have regular hours and an office to those that work in industries that are operational 24 hrs a day and don’t get holidays off (plant workers, oil field, medical, etc) is insane. Politicians don’t even know what real work is and those that may have in the past forget it after a week in DC.

I think most burnt-out daily drudge workers would say it's a good thing.

I'm sure pouring coffee for 32 hours is plenty exhausting, right?!

That would also mean a 4 day school day…. How will kids survive without free daycare and free lunch for another day

Well, “our” kids are so far ahead of the rest of the world….

I think you may have missed the part about "with no reduction in pay."

There are only three kinds of people who don't see the sheer idiocy in something like this:

1. Lazy people who feel entitled to something for nothing.

2. Populists addicted to victimhood who are too stupid to understand how employment actually works and instead are simply (and I mean that literally) sure that someone is taking advantage of them.

3. Politicians who know that it is irresistible bait for number 1 & 2.

Bernie somehow manages to be in all three categories at once.

Quite a feat...for comparison's sake, 4Cubbies is only in one for sure, possibly two of them.

Why do people like to work? That's the better question.

Who cares how many hours someone is putting in. Businesses need people that work part time. It offers flexibility and lower rates.

However, the bigger factor is that most require 40 hours to be eligible for benefits. So this proposal would essentially make part time workers available for benefits.

In all honesty, I'm sure his proposal is encompassing to keep everything the same as it is now except reducing the 40 hour requirement. It's one of those bills that will in all likelihood never see a vote, and if it does, it would be killed super quick.

I do wish it would be more standard practice to offer employees more flexibility where possible. I'd love to work 4X10 work weeks. An extra day off would be nice. Hell, a 40 hour work week would be nice.

I realize this ship has long since sailed, but an employment contract between an employer and its workers is a private contract that the government should stay out of. There has been enough government distortion of labor marketsd already!! Obviously, the worker who accepts such a contract voluntarily feels that the opportunity is better than his or her alternatives. If the worker doesn't want to work 40+ hours per week, do something else and accept the consequences!

I've never once worked at a placed that offered this, nor have I ever known anyone that's worked at a placed that offered this.

It's why I always laugh when people say "9-5 job".

What's confusing about that? Oh sure, there are some people who are able to make their livings doing something that they enjoy. They're in the minority.

In general, working sucks, which is why I find the typical TD posters who think that working a lot somehow makes them morally superior to others to be funny.
