But the IRS only manages to identify half of the potentially 1.4 million people likely affected by the fraud in 2015, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said in its report.
“Cases of employment identity theft can cause significant burden to innocent taxpayers, including the incorrect computation of taxes based on income that does not belong to them,” said J. Russell George, the inspector general.
It’s long been a conundrum in the federal government.
The IRS knows of 2.4 million people a year who file taxes using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, which is generally given out to immigrants who aren’t authorized to work. But the IRS is not allowed to talk with Homeland Security to help agents identify who and where those taxpayers are.

When I was finishing school a few years ago, I worked part time at a mexican joint.
Every single employee there was an illegal and being paid through social security numbers of previous employees (American citizens).

they can go to the SS death index and pick any soce. Some probably write down 123-45-6789.
I just did a myFICO monitoring thing and saw a different birthday listed for one of the reporting agencies.

Same shite happens at the Middle Eastern place I frequent. My friend who works there says the owner does it to college kid who could not do shite about it if they were audited.

When I lived and worked in Texas, they had what was referred to as 2 types of credit "Pre-Legal" and "Legal" credit. The credit that they had established under a fake SSN, and then the new credit they established under the new SSN that was theirs. A majority of the time when they got their new SSN they would let the credit from the old SSN go bad, or charge off.
The old credit will still show up on most credit reports because it's associated with their name, DOB, and address. But they would deny that it was theirs.

If in the past you applied for credit, and somebody keyed in the wrong info prior to pulling credit, it will stay on your credit report until you dispute it, and the CB removes it. Most creditors ignore this kind of stuff, cause it's very common.

I read a while back that illegals can get a "package" of fake identification. for something like $60 - they get three pieces of fake ID - SSN, DLicense and one other that escapes me.

This isn't true. I did a paper a few years ago and I think in 2010 around 60% of them filed a return but I can't find a link for that BUT this link

20 years ago ,while living in Nashville, ICE and the FBI raided an apartment in the Nolensville area and found stacks of fake SS cards to the ceiling. A Mexican crime syndicate was busted.
