The brands that failed to meet the extra virgin olive oil standards, according to this study: Bertolli, Carapelli, Colavita, Star, Pompeian. Eat Grown Local also reports: Mazzola, Mezzetta, Newman's Own, Safeway, and Whole Foods in this list; the data may be from the earlier 2010 study when more brands were evaluated.P

The real deal: California Olive Ranch, Cobram Estate, Lucini. Kirkland Organic, Lucero (Ascolano), McEvoy Ranch Organic are also noted by Eat Grown Local.P

Another reason I'm glad I got a Costco membership

However, it is true that freshness with olive oil is important, and a cheap but freshly-pressed extra virgin olive oil is better than an expensive one that's been stored for weeks before shipping, only to sit on a store shelf for weeks more. Regardless of where you live, the key is to check the bottle for a harvest date and make sure the oil you're getting is as fresh as possible.

Very long and interesting UC Davis Olive Oil Report

I switched to the Cali Olive ranch brand a few years ago. It is tasty and grown/pressed/bottled in Cali, so you know what you're getting. COR sells a blended EVOO as well as a few varietals and an olio nuovo style unfiltered oil in he fall. Walmart, rouses, etc carry COR in SE LA.

Always remember the source. UC Davis is an aggie school between Sacramento and Napa, and hugely into oenology and other local agriculture. Most of the winemakers here in Napa are Davis grads. Olives, like grapes, grow well in the poor soil/arid climate here in the Napa Valley, so you see Olive trees everywhere, frequently along the roadside near vinyards. They are promoting local products, and backing it up with testing data.

That said, I just replaced some Bertolli crap with COR, before i read this! Feeling pretty sharp.

It's funny you post that. I just picked some olive oil up the other night and liked the name so I grabbed that as well. I'd never even heard of it

a great label and good branding will sell a ton of product. I like it, but use it to saute stuff, so do not really notice a flavor difference.

I received several bottles from Oregon Olive Mill as a gift and each has been great. Tuscan, Arbequina, and some citrus infused that, when mixed with citrus vinegar and Mediterranean spices that came in the package, is so good we eat it for breakfast.
My everyday evoo is Lucini.

Me, too. Started buying it years ago. In the dark glass bottle. Always good. Inexpensive. Nice looking bottle. Can't go wrong.

Costco seems to be the kind of company that goes out of their way to ensure that they have quality products.

I like the James Plaginol. But you can get John Folses at Calandros and it is grown in Donaldsonville. Pretty good stuff.
