Team Building Hypo: Trey Burke is the pick

Alright, so let's start with the position that Trey Burke is our pick at #6. There are no trades on draft day, and we buy no other picks. Trey Burke is our only pick in the draft.
How do you proceed in FA to construct the team around him? What trades do you make? Signings?
What the heck do you do with Austin Rivers? Give up on him? Have him play SG? Compete at PG?
What about Vasquez? Do you have him start most of the season and bring Burke along slowly? Have him play backup PG? Have him play off ball? Trade?
What pieces do you surround Burke, Anderson and Davis with?
Let's hear it.

I assume we're also keeping Gordon in this hypothetical.
1) Go after Iggy hard. Between Gordon and Iggy the perimeter defense should be good enough even with Burke's shortcomings.
2) Trade Vasquez by the deadline. There's just no room for him. I see Miller working out better as a backup 2/3 than Vasquez. As an offball 2/3 Miller brings better shooting and defense and while he doesn't have PG skills like Vasquez, he's not a bad passer.
3) Rivers becomes the 6th man (if he pans out). He can play both guard spots and if you're up against a PG that's too big or fast for Burke Rivers can step in.
On paper you want more shooters around Burke, but most of your FA money was spent on Iggy, and with the little cash you have left you're not going to get backup wings that shoot much better than Roberts and Miller.
I'd also consider bringing Aminu back because this team will still have rebounding problems.

The more and more this offseason goes on I realize this may be yet another rough season to watch. Oh well, I am here to support this team.
I'd rather trade Gordon than Vasquez. Hopefully Gordon shows some flashes of talent in the beginning of the year so we can get a good piece(s) for him.

You can do what you wish with him. My only stipulation was that we pick and keep Burke, and make no other trades on draft day (the only reason for this is because people rarely know the value of draft trades and make outlandish, ridiculous ones).
However, I'll back up...my only stipulation is that we keep Burke and you be somewhat realistic. After that, go nuts.

I like Burke, and if he's available I hope we pick him. I think we need a scoring SF, so maybe we trade for a vet like Danny Granger or Iggy. I would keep Rivers another year I guess, but I don't really care for him, and I thought it was a lame pick. Keep Vasquez for sure, him and Burke should do well together. Maybe make moves for a C. I don't really know. I'm not an expert in this area. Go Pels!!

Improvement this year will have to come a lot from internal development. To be honest though, Miller, Rivers and Roberts all showed flashes that they can be at least reliable rotation players. If we get a legit starter at SF in trade/FA, this team may be decent without much else being added.

so you're saying if he starts actually playing well for the team, you want to trade him?

1. Go after Iggy, Webster, or Brewer
2. Try to package Vasquez and Lopez to get an uprgade at the C spot.
3. Resign Aminu to a small deal
4. Have Rivers stay at PG to backup Burke
I think a bench of Rivers, Miller, Aminue, Ryno, and Smith would be nice.

The team really has too many question marks to guess how they are going to go..
1. Keep Gordon?
2. Is Davis a Center?
3. Is Rivers a PG?
4. Can Vasquez get better?
5. Can/should they keep showcasing Anderson? Or trade him?
If they draft Burke, I think that answers # 3 and 4. You shift Rivers to SG and look to deal Vasquez. Keeping Vasquez just muddies the water and creates team drama. Burke would be fighting a losing battle all year and that's unnecessary.
If they don't deal Gordon or Anderson, then they'll be major rotation players. Depending on what they could get for Vasquez (if anything) and who they might package with him (Lopez?), you'd have to plug the big hole as SF. Plus if you move Lopez, you'd have to replace him as well. I'm sure you can get a SF in a salary dump (Butler, Granger or Marion) or a couple of low tier FA (Webster, Budinger, Wright or Brewer). So let's say they grab D. Wright and C. Budinger, trade Vasquez for a future pick. Also, they sign D. Collison to help Burke transition in and D. Blair for front court toughness.
Burke/Collison/Roberts
Gordon/Rivers
Budinger/Wright/Miller
Davis/Anderson/Thomas
Lopez/Blair/Smith
Ehh.. not a great team, but much deeper and more talented than last year. If they stay healthy, it'd be a decent team (maybe challenge for the 8th spot)..

Easy.
Have Burke and Vasquez split time at PG.
Gordon at the 2.
Rivers playing combo.
Make a big push for Dorell Wright or Martell Webster with AFA and Miller backing them up.
Davis and Ryno at the 4. (No brainer)
Center is the big question. I don't think we'll get Pekovick. Do you overpay for Bynum or Al Jefferson and see if you can get one to sighn a short term deal? Make an offer for Splitter or take a run at Kaman? If it were me, I'd like to spend the money and see if we could buy Lucas Nogueira and just platoon him with Lopez and Smith.
Suntiger as GM's Roster:
Burke/Vazques
Gordon/Rivers
Webster or Wright/AFA/Miller
Davis/Anderson
Nogueira/Lopez/Smith

I like the idea of going after Iggy as long as its not a ridiculous contract. A team with a crunch time lineup of Burke Gordon Iggy Anderson and Davis(Lopez would probably start but come out in crunch time depending on our opponent) is a huge improvement over last season and keeps us young. We could possibly contend for the 8 seed with that lineup. However, there are just so many possibilities with this team that its hard to speculate.
Another scenario: I would be happy with us trading for 13 and Marion and then drafting and stashing Saric. Gives us an improved starting 5 for this year (although we'd probably end up in the lottery still which isnt necessarily bad because of the quality of next year's draft) and if Saric comes over in year two we could have a young developing team that can seriously contend in 2014 and beyond.
I would want to re-sign Aminu under both of these circumstances cause I think he's still young enough to improve and be an extremely good player off the bench.

Sign Iggy and Aaron Gray. Re-sign Aminu. Both Vasquez and Lopez put on the trading block for a 2014 draft pick or SG/C depth
Burke/Rivers/Roberts
Gordon/Rivers
Iggy/Aminu/Miller
Davis/Ryno/Smiht
Gray/Davis/Smiht
With a few new pieces added in before the deadline for Vasquez and ROLO

Bump b/c we obviously need more "if we draft Burke" threads active.

solid interview. I like the way he carries himself, seems to be a class act.
To OP question.
Burke at 6.
I think Marion and 13 would be huge for this team. Draft someone like Shabazz or Nogueira there. Let AFA walk.
Should leave us with enough cash to do a S&T with Utah for Al Jeff. Possibly with Lopez/Vazquez.
A lineup like this would be exciting and should make the playoffs:
Burke/Roberts
EG/Rivers
Marion/Shabazz
Davis/Ryno
Al Jeff/Smith
ETA--I still would rather McCollum over Burke. Makes for a more dynamic backcourt with Gordon.
