I understand Gilmore, Williams, Prevot, etc....

I don't know really anything about DE Lewis Neal ? He seems to be high on us and I know that Ohio State wanted him which really carries no weight for me.

He seems to be very smallish when you consider that a team like Bama's offensive line averages 316 lbs.

Is he a guy with a big motor and heart ? Can he fill a void ?

I am hoping for Gilmore and Williams first and Prevot would be a bonus, but a 6"1" DE , I dont know ?

PS..I trust our coaches for Negitigers out there.

Thoughts ?

Neal might get in before Prevot decides but your statement is just as possible. I'm higher on Prevot by far but think Neal has a higher floor. I have serious doubts Prevot ever has enough bulk to play DE. He can't seem to add weight.

Yeah, what the hell does Urban Meyer know about identifying talent?

Sam Montgomery weighs 245 lbs right now. Barkevious Mingo weighs 240 lbs right now (and that may be pretty generous from lsusports.net). Lewis Neal weighs 232 lbs right now. I don't understand why his height is that big an issue as long he carries enough weight on his frame. Plenty of DE have been successful at ~6'1"--Dwight Freeney, Elvis Dumervil, Jerry Hughes, Melvin Ingram, etc. Also, his lifting numbers are very strong compared to most high school DE.

There was a rumor that Prevot came in at only 6'2" at a camp recently, well below his reported height of 6'4".

too bad silver moon no longer exists on campus...he'd get his freshman 15 quick solely on big mamma's smothered chicken and rice.

This. For what it's worth the coaches are just as high on Prevot as they are on Neal.

IMO Neal is very underrated.

I would say Prevot with more speed and quickness is definitely better than Neal who looks a little stronger. The good news is he isn't a sprint champion but that 4.9 supposed 40 time must have been when he was sick with the flu...he isn't that slow. I think the services have him rated about right...a high 3*. Seems to have a good sense of where the play is going to go by the highlights, but then again these are highlights.

I know Prevot is around 200 pounds but so was Mingo and when Mingo met Moffitt and redshirted it made all the difference. Now Mingo is going into his fourth year of college and he ways 240+ and with his speed that is all the size he needs at the college level.

40 is a little off but not much. Neal is not fast nor is he quick. He is a smart disciplined player with great field vision and instincts that allows him to be in a position to make a play. He will rarely lose containment or be out of position. He is strong and a sound fundamental tackler with great technique.

IMO he is already close to his ceiling. He is a smart football player, tackles well, uses his hands well, and already has 240-235 lbs on his short frame. He is not getting bigger or faster. His game is not raw. All this being said, he is a good solid football player.

Prevot's ceiling is about a hundred floors up. Prevot, as just about everyone knows, draws comparisons to Mingo. Prevot is an athletic specimen with freakish ability and great speed. Mingo came to LSU at around 210 lbs. Prevot has another year of HS and I have very little doubt that Moffit can get Prevot up in weight.

I am a Prevot fan, always have been. I think he is the best DE out there for us. That being said, I like Neal and wouldn't mind having him in the class.

Neal's got some of the quickest feet and change of direction of any d-lineman in this class IMO. He also has heavy hands and football strength- you never see him get moved off the line once he anchors down, even when taking on 300lb linemen.
He's consistently been one of the top performers at every camp he's been to but his measurables have kept him from moving up. Some coaches think he can be a lot like Courtney Upshaw, which is a high enough ceiling for me. Guys like this that just know how to play football can always help a team win a ton of games, i.e. Mathieu, Hester.

Yikes. From what I saw on film this kid is pretty quick. Maybe I need to watch it again.

It's always funny how two people can see the same thing and come up with two different analysis.

Note that most of the top DE's are in the 6'5" 265lb class as I guess most are putting in speed at the ends now. I did not look up Neals size. I would be just as interested in his agility and speed stats.

I am skeptical too but LSU seems to really want him, and Ohio State really wants him too even after he decommitted.

People see 6'1" and 4.9 and just write him off. He may not be an athletic freak but maybe he is just a hell of a football player.

Also, I really think we would be an LB for us down the line, so I don't see size as an issue. I just don't think we are recruiting him as an LB, and that is for a reason.

That's because he is quick. He went to a camp in Charlotte and beat out some pretty good O-linemen. The only DE who performed better was Lawson.

By the way Lawson is 6'2 and without a doubt one of the best DE in this years recruiting class. So being 6'1 or 6'2 isn't that big of a deal for those who mainly look at his height as a true estimate of his future potential
