I will have to maintain ~12 acres this summer. I don’t plan on cutting it every week but every other. It’s most flat and open but there are some trees, a pond, and a house and shed on the land. Also an oak bottom on one side.

I don’t want to spend all day so was looking for something fast with a big deck.

Leaning toward a Scag cheetah with a 72” deck. Is that good enough? Any other brands I should look at?

If you're dropping that much coin, go to Lawnsite.com and get reviews. They run these machines commercially and can give much better reviews than we can on residential models.

I’ve got a 61” cheetah. Would recommend the Scag brand in general.

I’d go with the 72” Diesel Tiger Cat for that big of a yard

I have 4 pieces of Kubota equipment and they are all great.
Only machine I think is comparable is Scag in the ZTR mower

Look at what the commercial guys are running. The big ones aren’t running scags. They are running the big JDs. My personal mower for 2 acres is a scag. I’d go 60” JD if I could afford one.

What Freeman says makes a ton of sense, but the investment goes up double.

a 72” Diesel Zero Turn will outrun a 72” finishing mower by at least 1.5 to 1.

They are just that much more efficient.

12 acres is a big piece- as long as you are prepared to be out there for 6 hours or so, you’re good.

If not, get a Compact Tractor with a Cab and a BIG finishing mower

I'll add in my question to this thread since I was going to start a similar one. I have about 3-4 acres to mow each week, not just a lawn but some thicker stuff in the middle of tree orchard rows. Have had a Hustler Raptor SD 60 for three years now, but it's just not up to the job. What recommendation do y'all have for a good mower for this size job?

Same answer...Scag or Kubota. Cut it higher on the first pass then drop the deck and recut. Doesn’t take long cause you’re hauling arse but those two machines can chew thru some thick shite.

I ran a Woods finishing mower for a few years. Not near as quick as the ZTR. Cut isn’t as good either.

Anyone ever heard of Spartan Mowers? Place in Lafayette sells them and they seem to be built like a tank for the price. Kawasaki motors on most models. Just curious if anyone has any knowledge about them. They must be fairly new.

Look at what the big commercial guys are running. There is a reason they run the big John Deere. I’d get the 60” as loaded as you can JD. It will be strong enough to cut what you need and super reliable as well.

I’ve owned a Spartan for about 2 years now. It’s built like a tank. I don’t have any complaints so far. Mine has the Kohler. Would not hesitate to buy again. Purchased at K&D on Old Hammond.

Good to know. My Gravely is about 10 years old and still runs good. But everything else on it besides the motor seems to be falling apart and the constant repairs are starting to be frustrating. May consider a Spartan when the time comes.

ETA: They do have a 72” deck on some models. I wouldn’t need that wide of a cut, though.

No commercial guys run jd around Baton Rouge. It’s all either Scag or Gravely.

Last time I saw an RCI crew they were running the JDs with the airless tires. They are the biggest I know of.
