Just buy a rifle that you are comfortable with. One person will swear by one brand of rifle while the other one loathes it. Same goes for scopes. Stay away from remington 700 models. Best bang for buck as far as scopes are concerned has to be the Nikon Pro staff.

Buy a good rifle that feels comfortable to you. I'm partial to Remington 700 in .270, but also would try Browning Xbolt or Ruger Hawkeye. My rifle has an economic Leupold VX2 (250 range). This setup has not failed me in the last 18 years, and will last the rest of my life. I did turn the trigger down to 2.75# when I got it because Remingtons have a pretty stiff trigger out of the box.

Some people love to spend huge amounts of money on overpriced equipment (you know the kind) but still struggle to use it correctly. You cannot go wrong with the brands I mentioned, and it will be in or very close to your budget. You can always upgrade your scope in the future. JMO

If you'll shop around with some patience, you can get a really nice setup for that price point.

I've actually got this setup right now. Found an A Bolt II in 7-08 for ~$600 and put a very nice Leupold VXR on it for right under $1k. Granted, I had to search long and hard for the scope at the price I got it for ($340). They retail for $500.

They're hard to find, but if you can find it, the ABolt is my favorite deer rifle ever made. I've heard good and bad things about the x-bolt, but my main gripe with it is the plastic. Can't get past that. The A bolt is such a sturdier feeling rifle.

I'm a big fan of the Ruger M77 line as well.

Tikkas are shite.

Thanks, everyone for your great advice and well-reasoned thoughts... this is why the Outdoor Board is the best board on TD.

I'll research each and every one of your recommendations, as I intend to take a long time to purchase. This will be next season's rifle, not this season's... and many seasons to come!

I have to get my kid a new rig before next season. He is ready for a big boy rifle & his current one has unobtainable ammo.

I'm sure they do. I've never actually shot one, but I knew a couple would bite.

I own this rifle. Was on sale for $500 at Cabela's awhile back. Then go to europtic.com or samplelist.com to buy a demo scope for a helluva lot cheaper than retail price.

ETA - I bet you can find a Vanguard S2 for $400 or slightly more on gunbroker.
