Yellow Lab puppy recommendation

My family is looking for a yellow lab puppy in the Baton Rouge area. This will just be a family pet so I’m not interested in hunting pedigree or anything like that. Just looking for a decent quality, healthy, purebred yellow lab. Female preferred. So if anyone can recommend any breeders or individuals with females that are ready I’d appreciate it.

I’ve heard lots of good things about huntfield kennels in Brookhaven. Sorry, No personal experience though

Check craigslist? Got both of my yellows off there... for free. 11yrs old and 9yrs old now. Got both as puppies, perfect family pets

I got one from them, they pretty much have "British Labs" which is basically the same thing as the "American Lab", supposed to be bred from a more laid back line and not quite as big. Ours id fox red, which the AKC considers yellow,
We were pleased with the facilities and Mark and Melody were great people to work with

There are 5 major health tests that reputable lab breeders do to the parents of the litter, at a minimum. OFA Hips, OFA Elbows, EIC Testing, CNM Testing, and Eye CERF. These tests are important for all labs, even the ones that lay on the couch 99% of the time. Otherwise you could potentially be setting yourself up for greater vet expenses and heartbreak.
The cost for a health tested litter is not any higher than a trashy backyard litter most of the time.
Robert Authement(lake arthur) usually has the best priced health tested litters(all colors) in South Louisiana, and most of the time they're with pedigrees that are above the average mutt. Give him a call. 337-515-2728

100% agree if I was buying a Lab that I was about to sink a small fortune in training and time to be a hunting dog. Not sure if I personally would want to pay for the additional costs for those tests for a couch Lab unless I just wanted peace of mind and had a large checkbook.

You present the perfect example of the general populations inaccurate idea of health testing and the costs involved.
#1 The testing and cost is on the breeders end, not the buyers.
#2 With a little research, most of the time you can get a pup from health tested parents for the same or LESS than these backyard jokes that are often posted on these "puppy wanted" threads.
A quick example of why its important.
About 30% of ALL LABS, couch potato or hunting dogs are EIC Carriers. When you breed 2 carriers you get a pile of puppies that are affected. EIC is basically an exercise or excitement induced seizure/collapse. So when your kid comes home from school everyday and Fido gets excited and falls on the floor you can have the talk with your kid about why this happens all the time. Watch this 1 minute video. LINK
Or when your lab can't walk around the house at 6 years old because it's hips are trash and you have to explain to your family that it'll be $2k for a hip replacement or $1 to take it in the back pasture and take it out of its misery.
Sure you can go take a gamble and hope you don't get a dog like that, but why do it? Especially when you know better, and there's really no extra cost.

Help me out with that one, is the breeder not going to pass those costs on to the buyer? I know what those health certs cost because my YLF has them so I guess that I know a little more than the general population about health testing for dogs. I also know that a puppy out of my dog that was bred by a stud with the same kind of pedigree and health certs is going to cost much more than the average backyard Lab bred puppy. However, I am also probably not targeting that buyer of a backyard Lab for a sale of one of my puppies.

Pay extra for a British Lab

It will be an inside/outside dog. Just a family pet so I don’t care about open registration or hunting pedigree. Looking to stay under $1000. Last one I got was from a family, not breeder and was AKC registered and was a great dog.

The average untested lab on these classified pages go for 600-800 and you can find plenty of health tested litters for the same price, so in a sense, yes, the breeder is absorbing the costs so that they can put a healthy pup on the market and stay competitive on pricing. When you factor in stud fees, shots, feed, and sire/dam testing there is very little profit in there for ethical breeders, but often times they're not in it for the profit.

Why not just rescue a lab?

We got our boy from Gray Legend Labradors in Pineville, La. Our pups Sire is Boss and Dam is Remi. Remi comes from a championship show dog bloodline from the East Coast. These labs are English labs, so they are a little shorter, have shorter snouts and have big heads. My dog is now 103 pounds and is a great dog. I highly recommend them.

It doesn't make sense to me that a eye, hip and elbow tested and "good" dog wouldn't command a higher price regardless of the costs of the tests.

Until you get to the $2,500-$5,000 litters, over that very few get a chance at even sniffing. Tons of Labs in shelters waiting on a forever family or needle.

You can find a lot of great puppies with that budget.
I would look real hard at Kendal Herr's dogs or one offs from her litters. Dickendall pedigree is the gold standard of English Labradors. If you browse through the labrador books in B&N, you will see her dogs all over the covers and mentioned by name in pedigrees. Her kennel is in TX and she has many kennels that maintain her bloodlines. Rebelland Labradors moved to TX from Oxford, MS and they still put out some amazing dogs.
There is also a Facebook group called English Labrador Retrievers. This page has litters available and pictures of Dam / Sire / Puppies.
I would take my time on selecting a puppy.
I would suggest buying "The Art of Raising a Puppy" from the Monks of New Skete. This book has a good puppy personality test in the appendix. It is a great start for selecting a family pet with the right temperament. It is also a great training guide for raising a house dog.
I would also suggest going English Labrador over the field trial dogs most common to Louisiana based off your desire to have a family pet.
