Drove up to the camp yesterday afternoon, snowing most of the way, only to find out that we had lost power. I posted some pics from buddies who were already in their stand in the "Snow pics" thread, and was really looking forward to hunting the snow. We drove around and found the power trucks within a few miles of us, and the lineman said "shouldn't be but a few more hours for y'all". So went to town for dinner hoping that power would be restored by the time we got back. Well, it wasn't...

At 10pm one of the guys contacted a lineman that he knows who said "I'm in bed. We called it for the night. We'll be back at it for 6:30am". So you're all excited about hunting the snow, but now you're without power and heat.

Do you:
A. Pack up and go home
B. Light the Mr Heater in your camper and hope you don't die from CO poisoning
C. Put on every layer of clothes you own and get under 5 blankets
D.Seep in your truck for the night

I chose "D"....

I would probably have gone with C. I hate the idea of running my truck all night while I'm sleeping. I really don't even know exactly why.

Propane heat is the only thing we have in our cabin.

Just crack a window for some fresh air and run the heater. We have done that for 20 years with no problem. I do have a CO detector on the table while we sleep though.

Faced w a similar scenario with cold camp I always run the heater for 10 or so minutes. Then get in bed w my socks and fleece outer gear. Sleep like a champ. The key is a stocking hat and hoodie. That pillow gets sooooooo cold

Geez, don't you ever go camping? There's no heater in a tent and people somehow survive with only a sleeping bag. It's not that cold.

I had power last night.

I slept with the windows cracked and a box fan on.

Did you not have a sleeping bag because the camp normally has electric heat? I’ve never had a camp with power and use a pretty mediocre 20 degree bag with long johns on. We have propane heaters but usually don’t run them because everything will be full of condensation when it cools down.

It may be but I am female level paranoid about heaters.

I was ill-prepared for the temperature and did not have even a mediocre bag... Would have definitely preferred that route.

Now I know.

Side note......

Never sleep in your gear

Moisture from from your body saturates your clothes through the night. Ideally you want to sleep in undies or shirt and pants that you will change out of

We do a lot of pit cooking and boiling at the camp, so we always have a lot of propane.
Buy a one or two head heater that fits on a tank, think the one head is 30$. Put in away till ya need it.
