I use my Field Master 22LR to dispose of wild pigs. Why? Because it’s cheap, it’s accurate, and it actually penetrates the brain better than 9mm and 38 special. The other cheaper rounds.

I read an authorized biography of a mafia hit man (I think there is a documentary about this dude) and his weapon of choice was a .22 for exactly that reason...at blank range to the back of the head it is prone to rambling around instead of going straight through or even following the bone...a lot like shooting pool softly instead of pounding the cue ball. I do not know if there is any science behind it but this old bot supposedly killed a bunch of people with a .22. Also very quite compared to most guns.

By trained operators. If you are competent and comfortable using a rifle in your house then go for it.

I would say that most people are not trained in techniques to clear a house with a rifle.

I'd posit that anyone capable of point it away from themselves and emptying the magazine can clear a house. They will probably clear it of any living relatives but it will be cleared all the same....

But you are arguing for using a pistol?

I’m not arguing for anything. Use whatever you feel most confident with.

I’ve heard a lot of people use their carry gun for home defense. People might want to own just one gun or a similar platforms. Then a full sized handgun gives you familiarity and lots of capacity.

I don’t use a pistol in my house for fear of it going through walls.

I have the same concern. If god forbid something happened I'd probably have to choose between getting shot or shooting towards my neighbors house which is full of kids. It's not likely a 9mm would make it through everything but I keep a 12 gauge with loaded #4 turkey shot. I've seen what that does to a hog at 5 yards, I damn sure wouldn't want to get hit with it.

Home defense short barrel shotgun. People don't consider how nervous they would be so pointing a gun is better than having to aim. I don't think most of us on this forum would have a problem with aiming a pistol but I know my wife would be shaking like a leaf.

You serious Clark? Leave the home defense to your husband..

It would be better than nothing. Load it up with CCI’s Uppercut bullets.
Can’t beat a short barreled shotgun for home defense.

Yes, it looks like you have more respect for the .22 than most here. Which is proof to me that you are better informed than most here.

I don’t want to get shot with anything, but you didn’t ask if it would work, you asked if it was a good choice. 22 LR aside a lever action anything is a poor choice for home defense given the plethora of reliable semi-autos.

Get a Walther WMP 22 mag or a Kel-Tec PMR 22 mag. If nothing else you will have plenty of rounds to sling.

Even in a 30 full choke 12 gauge loaded with anything the pattern will be 330% larger than a .22 LR pattern at the muzzle or any distance downrange. In a 36" X 80" doorway with a 6 foot tall person standing in it 1/4 of an inch is a heaping pile less than 3/4 of an inch.

You still have to aim it....

That's 3/4" and 1/4" in a 30x80 door way, to scale. Yeah it's bigger but not big enough to just spray and pray. Most indoor situations probably won't have enough range for the patter to open much. I'm not saying the .22 is better, just to aim the shotgun.

You should have some sort of plan and understanding of what can happen specific to your home. Obviously nothing goes to plan, but some planning is better than none. For instance, all our bedrooms are on the second floor. I've already told my wife to get the kids and go in the guest bathroom with the metal tub. Our bedroom is at the top of the stair landing and overlooks the main entrance to the house. If I had to engage with someone, I'm shooting (9mm) down and not in line with a neighbor. If they shoot up at me, it's not in the direction where my family is and if a stray goes that way, hopefully the metal tub stops anything that went through several walls.

I shoot once a week practicing from the draw. A miss is possibly someone innocent's life and I take that seriously. I live in one of the safest areas I can think of. However, I travel around Houston for work and strongly believe in carrying in general. Bad stuff happens in good places too. If I've got the guns, I've got the training, it doesn't take much more family discussion to be prepared for the extremely unlikely scenario that something takes place in my home.

That’s pretty fricking stupid unless you live in a state like CA or NY. In LA, MS and TX you have something called the castle doctrine. All you need is reasonable fear harm will come to you or your family if someone breaks in your home. Guess what you don’t have to be in the home either.

Buddy of mine had his mom living with him. He worked late sometimes. Came home one night and saw a guy crawling through front window of his home. His mother was inside. He shot and killed the burglar from his driveway with his Smith 686. DA decided it was a solid shoot since his mother was in the home.

Wider than a .22.

Get a couple 9mm pistols. You need a .22 as well. I really like the takedown models that can fit easily into a backpack.

Mafia hit men and special forces men are man killers and do it every day and act with an element of surprise.
I haven’t shot any man but a shite ton of animals and if I had my choice I wouldn’t ever use a 22for anything larger than a rabbit that wasn’t in a cage.
Anyone arguing the fact has never been around a hog when it got western.

No. If you must defend your home with a .22LR, it should absolutely be a semi-automatic, either a Ruger 10/.22 or equivalent OR an AR platform in .22LR.

(As always, better than nothing does not equal good.)
