This year. Trying to get 1st deer on public land with bow and badly hit a large buck well within range. After that I feel I did everything right by leaving and going back much later and got a dog but no buck. I still hate myself,

Shot a really wide rack 8pt with my bow. Good shot, good blood trail. I didn't give him enough time to lay down. I tracked all day till dark. Bumped him twice. Crossed Creek and he was gone.
Would have been my biggest.

Participated in the longest poker/whiskey drinking game ever the night before opening day.
Freezing cold the next morning, walked in about an hour late and jumped the biggest buck I've ever seen...50 yards from my stand.
And then l got the whiskey shits. That was the last time I ever wore that union suit.

Not paying enough attention to the weather. Decided to make a late morning/mid day hunt in the rain. Got to my stand and a pretty terrible arse thunderstorm is on top of me. Lightning is crashing waaaaaay too close. I was shitting bricks. I still like to hunt in the rain, but I don't frick with thunderstorms.
I did actually see a deer during that mess.

Six Point
At the time, this was the biggest deer I had on camera on public land. This was a heavy antlered minimum 17 inches wide on public land in Louisiana. I had only one picture of this deer and it was around midnight when the picture was taken. I was bow hunting on October 2nd 2014 about 30 feet up a pine tree. I had a button buck and spike pass near me at around 4:00 pm. Then at 5:50 pm the Big 6 point stepped out of the thicket and was headed towards me. I prefer to shoot standing (outdoor carpet on platform of my climber). I waited til he got behind s tree and thicket. I stood up and was ready. I saw a doe in the corner of my eye scanning the pine trees. As soon as the six pointer stepped out the doe had its head down I drew back on my bow but the buck’s arse end was facing me. It was eating yellow daisy flowers. Meanwhile the Dow is still scanning the pine trees and I have been drawn back which seemed like eternity. I was afraid to lower my bow because if I spooked the doe I knew the buck was gone. The buck finally turns broadside. Im steadying myself for the shot and the arrow flys and strikes the front shoulder. I either bumped the trigger or flapped the I watched him wonder off into the thicket with my arrow sticking out of its shoulder. I waited 45 minutes as soon as I started to climb down the noisy pine tree I heard something take off in the thicket. I hunt alone and I’m 1/2 mile into the woods. I looked til 9:30 at night I found my arrow broken off with blood on it. But I never found a drop of blood. I came back the next morning and looked for another 3 hours. It makes me sick losing a deer. I have never lost a deer prior or after that deer. Still makes me sick.

If this were "worst mistake while fishing", this would certainly be mine. The older I get, the more I pay attention, but it can still sneak up on you.

Thanksgiving morning, 2010. I had watched a doe the morning before come down a trail but couldn't get her stopped. Next morning she comes back an hour earlier and I'm ready. Arrow hit the perfect spot and she turned and ran north about 80 yards where I heard her crash in some cypress trees. I'm pumped. Give her 30 minutes, get down, find the arrow and await brother in laws arrival to help track/drag. I decide to climb back in the stand to make sure I've got a good idea on the group of trees I last saw her by. Of course I leave my bow on the ground. I glance at the trees and see something shiny...and moving towards me. Big ole crab claw 10 pointer follows that does scent to right where I shot her. Looks down at my bow that is literally 2 feet from him, then looks up me in the stand. And turns around and trots off.

In 1971, I went mule deer hunting in Wyoming. Stayed with some friends for two weeks hunting public land. We had set up a drive on a draw and I was with the potential shooter group at the top of the draw. My buddy had the rifle and I was wearing a 9mm pistol for whatever reason. I walked a little ways away from the vehicle and dropped off the side of the ridge overlooking the draw. I'm sitting there with nothing but the 9mm and here comes a nice buck moving up the draw on the opposite ridge. I'm sitting still in the brush waiting for my buddy to drop the buck. The buck keeps on coming and coming and I finally realize my buddy with the rifle doesn't even see the buck. It's about 50 yards across the draw to the opposite ridge, so I think what the hell, and open up with the 9mm. First shot misses high but the deer stops, directly across the draw from me. Next shot hit low and the deer starts moving up the draw again. I keep shooting like a crazy man. I'm committed now. Suddenly the deer turns and runs down the ridge into the draw and out of sight.
I'm standing there cussing my poor pistol skills, when the deer runs out of the draw and up the ridge I'm standing on. It kind of zigs and zags through the brush and stops 10 feet away turned broadside to me. Well I'm no pistol shot, in fact it wasn't even my pistol, but at that range I felt I couldn't miss. I aim just behind his shoulder and....click. Out of bullets! I had an extra magazine in my pocket and the deer is standing there stock still and panting from all the running around. But when I hit the magazine release he left the county.
Now, before anyone says it, yes, it was very un-sportsman like to attempt to shoot a mule deer buck with a 9mm pistol. Particularly at 50+ yards. But I was 18 years old and had visions of coming back to Louisiana a hero after taking a buck with a pistol. Also, I was strictly a duck hunter and knew nothing about deer hunting or deer for that matter. Knowing what I know now about 9mm pistol rounds and mule deer, I'm glad I never hit the deer...lol.

Hunting my lease in southern Illinois. Was using a pendulum site back in those days. It had been very cold for several days. Highs in the high teens.
I would go out around 1:00 and hunt until I couldn’t take the cold any longer. Was hunting on a small food plot that the deer were really using heavily. Had a deer probably 150 or so come in and I shot over his back at 18 steps.
Next day I go out and shoot my bow prior to leaving to hunt. Bow shoots fine so I’m thinking....I rushed the shot and just plain missed.
Go get in the stand in the same plot. Around 3:00 it’s starting snowing lightly. I look over my right shoulder and a legitimate 170” buck is coming into the plot. He stops at 25 yards. I take my time and release the arrow. Again, it sails over his back.
The deer runs off, I hang my bow up, sit down and am literally stunned to the point of silently laughing at myself. About that time the wind gusts really hard and out of the corner of my eye I see my bow rocking back and forth. Immediately the site catches my eye. As the bow rocks, the site isn’t moving, as a pendulum should.
I take the bow and begin to look at the site closely. That’s when I see the mud that is caked in the wheel that allows the site to swing to the correct spot.
The mud had frozen, preventing the site from working properly. It was the last day I ever shot a pendulum site.

My high school girlfriend offered to give me a blowjob in a box stand in 1989 and for some reason I refused. Something about there wasn't enough room. And there were deer in the plot and I didn't want to spook them.
To this day I cannot imagine what I was thinking. Totally wish I could have that one back.
Yep. You win the internet today.

Other than rushing the shot, it’s always the same. Hunting when I should have stayed home (rarely) staying home when I should have gone. (A lot)

Was probably 12-13 and we had parked the truck to go move a stand brush it in. I carried my gun with me the first trip as we walked into the oak bottom, walked back to the truck and decided to leave my gun because we had already walked back and forth. Got 25yrds from the truck headed back down to the bottom and a 130in or so 10pt stands up from a tree top and then proceeds to slowly walk away before trotting.
He had let us walk by twice before deciding to get out of there.
I now keep a gun with me within grabbing distance at all times during the season like I am on a battlefield!!!

I was 14/15ish. Bored as hell setting in a holler. Took out my grunt (never used it, wore it more as swag) and started calling not thinking shite would happen. About three grunts in a monster 12 point comes walking up. I didnt know that diagram inside doesnt work after a few times from moisture. The next grunt sounded like a duck call and he bounced out.

My first outfitted trip. Almost 20 years ago. Place was known to kill huge deer. The first few “Monster Bucks” videos were filmed there. Saved my pennies for two years and finally made it to Saskatchewan.
First day of the hunt and 10 minutes in I had a big 5x6 come in. Not sure if it was simply the moment or the disproportionate body size of Canadian deer to the SE whitetails I’d grew hunting. Whatever... In any event, I didn’t even raise my rifle. I was gonna be there for six days I figured. Certainly I’d see this one or another. I could take him later as a backup plan. I watched him at 100 yards for almost 10 minutes.
Fast forward, I never saw him again. Ended up with a solid buck; but, paled in comparison to the one I let go. It was harvested three weeks later. Nearly 170”...
Since that time I’ve hunted whitetails in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Kansas, etc. I’ve not seen one anywhere close to that one. Haunts me to his day.
The lesson, if it’s good enough to harvest on the last day. It’s good enough to harvest right now.
