Why aren’t stick steer boats more popular?

I’ve long been a fan/owner of tiller steer boats because of the extra floor space I get from not having a console. My current rig is a Roughneck 1860 with a 60hp tiller.
But…I’ve been really liking the idea of a stick steer lately. I think it’s neat that I could fish all day and never have to leave my front seat. Everything is within reach. Even the trolling motor can be reached.
Does anyone here have any experiences to share?

Depends on the type of fishing you are doing. Hard to pitch and flip sitting down in a boat with tall sides. A buddy swears they are unsafe because you can’t see the guy in the back when you are going. If he falls out you wouldn’t know it. Never heard of that situation happening, but I guess it could.

I’ve got my Dads old White Line aluminum skiff made in the Florida Panhandle. Stick steer with a 25 Merc. Plenty of advantages for a smaller boat. Perfect bream rig.

They don't go very fast or handle big water well. You can't really effectively stand and fish out of them due to limited deck space. They lack features found in similarly priced traditional boats.
That being said, they have their place. If you primarily fish sitting down on smaller bodies of water, they're really nice.

Because steering wheels are better technology
That said, on tv the other day there was a guy running a big aluminum boat with a 150 optimax pro xs tiller. That's a beast to be running with a stick

I've got a 14' flat bottom alumacraft stick steer with a 25hp Yamaha. It's awesome for what I do with it. It was a homemade rig, could be better if it was a pedestal seat. I can do everything seated, but I have a little space to stand and fish too.

side consoles take little to no room at all.
center consoles take up all your floor space so those are the worst.
if you ever have back issues and such you will understand just how much better side console is vs tillers

I’ve had back problems AND I’ve had side consoles. I still prefer a tiller.

I have a 16x48 Duracraft Stick Steer with an Evinrude 40 on it. I like mine because I can tell the bride to get in, sit down, shut up, and hold on.
I mainly white perch fish and it's great for that. The main reason SS boats are rated for lower HP is the steering system itself, I've never seen a mechanical SD rates over 70hp and the hydraulic system is rated for 90. Mine steers like butter, very smooth and not much input required.

All we used to have. They were great for running hooks. Every old time I perch jerked with would have nothing else. I'm running a Roughneck 1860 myself now. Its a SC with a 90 4 stroke Merc. I

One of these days I'll buy or build a stick steer tunnel or a jet.

We used to have a stick steer back in the day and the thing I hated about it was if you were by yourself all the weight was on the front and the thing plowed through the water and you got soaked if there was even a hint of a ripple on the water. Other than that it was a good boat.

Uggg…didn’t think about that.
You need a ballast.

I can definitely see that. I put tilt/trim on mine, so I can get the nose up a little.

Bought a preowned war eagle boat in that layout with a 40hp tohatsu.
Great on slick and calm days.
Not so great in rough water.
Like fishing in the marsh on calm days as you can pick up and go while staying seated. Huge ice chest behind you. Plenty of room each side to lay rods down.
Scaliat fishing excellent boat.
Schooling barfish at Old River that a great boat for that.
Only disadvantage trying to scout for bass or redfish you sit lower in the boat.
Sold it to my neighbor who is older and has back problems. He sits when he fishes and it works for him.

Stick steer, not tiller steer.

I think Tiller vs steering cables / wheel is a territory klanish thing. In the Bogue Chitto NWR, if you aren't running a tiller 40, and bouncing the bow, you ain't in the local click.
In Alexandria, Pineville, not so much.
