yep, loved it back in the day along with lead shot. Just had to let those hens go and of course that last bird was always a hen mallard.

I wouldn't mind going back to 3/30 for a year to two.

Build up the population and reduce the duck dynasty crowd.

It would suck initially, but be better in the long run

Unless you don't believe the breeding ground surveys, I don't see how this would help. The population this year was almost 49 million.

In terms of hunting, I think weather affects what we see more than what is up there. If the birds don't have to come down, they won't. Could have 100 million birds and still may not see the mallards that people talk about seeing 20 years ago.

As far as number of birds, I don't think 30 and 3 would make a huge difference if the habitat conditions aren't there. That is the most limiting factor in waterfowl production, with weather on the breeding grounds tied to it. Dry year, less potholes, decreased production. Prairie/Pothole conversion, less habitat, less ducks.

I agree with this. Every time I hear an old timer talking about all the ducks they used to slay, they always say it doesn't get cold anymore down here like it used to.

Funny how that happens

From what I remember, the points went like this...

Mallard drake 25 pts eventually going to 35
Mallard hen 75 pts then went to 100
Pintail 10pts
Teal 10 pts
Gads 10 pts
Wood ducks 75 pts
Widgeon 10 pts
Canvasback (?)
Spoons 10 pts

I'd have to check but I seem to remember Mallards and Woodies were like 90? This would have been in 67-68 and after.
Someone here talked about the mallard hen always being the last duck shot. Famous Federal Warden Joe Olivera used to beat hunters out to the blinds and sit in a ditch watching as hunters shot the limits. I have an idea if he was around way back when, he busted some folks for shooting a mallard hen when she wasn't "last."

first duck hunt ever, four of us in pit blind. First bunch of mallards come in at daylight, 4 ducks, all 100 point hens. Those got stuffed in back of blind.

Joe Oliveros or Oliveras. TD Link

I remember him. He was a die hard Fed. Rumor was: He busted a Bald Eagle hunting ring by being dropped off in a nesting area by helicopter and waited for the poachers to show up.

Joe Oliverous. There's a name from the past. Famous Fed from up in Mecca in 80's and 90's. Dude would sit out in the fields off 15 and wait on hunters to frick up.

Also, the Mallard hen which was always the last duck shot. How that always happened will be a mystery?

So why would a hen mallard, worth 90 pts, fit in the limit with 9 pintails (10 pts each)? And why would it matter if it was first shot or last? Did the pts change if it was shot last?

You could go over the points on the tail in. Say you shot 9 10-pt ducks. You could shoot a 100pt duck on your last bird. But if shot the 100pt duck first your day was over. They would run a thermometer up the ducks arse if they thought you were lying ..
