Around Idabell to be exact. How is the deer and duck situation in this area. The little river NWR and the surrounding area.

Good deer and bear hunting in that area. If I could move to Oklahoma I would. Awesome state for hunting. Everything from squirrel to elk. Very diverse terrain too and some big arse whitetail.

My sister and brother-in-law moved to Oklahoma about 15 years ago and stayed there for a dozen or so years before moving back down farther south in Mississippi.
He is a retired WLF agent and loved the area in OK. for hunting and found some great freshwater fishing close to where he was living.
They were living farther north and west of where you're asking and had some pretty hard winters they dealt with, and that and the potential for tornadoes helped them make the decision to move down to Mississippi. Plus it is much closer to family in the long run.

Lol, so what is depressing about the Tulsa area?
OP, I grew up in Lafayette, have lived in a few towns on the Gulf Coast, and have lived in Tulsa for the past year. For the outdoors activities I like to do (upland bird hunting, waterfowl hunting, turkey hunting, and crappie fishing, all on public lands/waters), I would never consider moving back to the Gulf Coast except on very special circumstances.
I’m not very familiar with SE OK, I have spent most of my time in NE and NW OK, but I would say that Oklahoma as a whole is head and shoulders above LA or TX when it comes to hunting that is available to the average person. I’m not talking about what’s available to people with deep pockets, I’m talking about what any joe blow with a hunting or fishing license has available to him.
The freshwater fishing is great, and the hunting on public lands is great if you are willing to put in some work, unlike most pursuits on public lands in LA where you could work your arse off, but you can’t kill game if it doesn’t exist.
I for sure wouldn’t want to live in Idabel, I’ve driven through it a number of times. But Tulsa or OKC would be good locations. Tulsa is a big enough town to have anything you need and it’s in a beautiful part of the state and a great jumping off point.
Sure, there are some super shitty parts of Oklahoma, just like there are super shitty parts of Texas and Louisiana. What I do know for a fact is that when I drive up to a parking area at a WMA in Oklahoma, I don’t have to wear knee boots to wade through the trash left by people like I had to do in LA. I haven’t found anything about the state of Oklahoma to be depressing if you compare it to LA (or some parts of TX).

I lived in Oklahoma for three plus years. It is a waterfowlers paradise in certain areas. I don't know about access to public acreage. I like others am more familiar with OKC and the area to the north. If you can find grain fields there should be waterfowl close. There are a bunch of deer and turkey in Oklahoma in general so it should be ok though SE OK may be a little off the beaten path.
PS. It can get cold and icy in Oklahoma.

Duck hunting can be fantastic but is inconsistent on public land. There are some monster bucks in that area, public or private land. You thinking about hunting there or moving there?

So true. Lawton is basically one big Walmart.

SE OK is usually spared the ice although it does happen about as much as NWLA.
To the OP, as indicated the area is rich in wildlife and can be very good in spots. That is one of the more heavily hunted parts of Oklahoma due to its proximity to TX, LA and AR, but compared to public hunting in LA itll be less crowded.

My father had an Army buddy that was from Talihina, which is in SE Oklahoma. When I was a little kid my dad would go up there every year to deer hunt with his buddy. They would trophy hunt only when my dad went. There was one place that they went one year where they horsebacked to a very remote cabin in the mountains. My dad shot a 10 point one year.
I went up there once during the summer, but we went fishing and I remember we caught a bunch of fish. Going there as a little kid made a lasting impression on me as my dad's buddy looked like the Marlboro man, cowboy shirt, hat, and boots. He lived on a ranch outside of town and had acres of land with cows and horses and grew some crops.
One thing I remember was there was a diner in the town and their specialty was fried rabbit. First time I remember seeing fried rabbit on a diner menu. And there were a lot of Indians that lived in the area.

I have a little farm in SE Oklahoma (not around Idabel area though). I like it and the hunting is good and outdoor activities are not far away.
Within 2 years I will be moving to up north because the heat kicks my arse as I am getting older. Years in the desert have made me less tolerant to extreme heat.
