No offense, VaBamaMan, but you're off base on this one. Neither you nor any other "mere mortal" is gonna reflexively turn that switch off or on when someone attacks you from "out of nowhere." Especially if you carry it in different conditions of readiness at different times.

I can give my story and why I never use a pistol with a safety for concealed carry. Luckily mine happened in a defensive pistol class and not in a life or death situation. Just out of college using a Star Model B 9mm in my class. I've shot it hundreds of times. I practiced drawing and shooting quite a bit. I was getting into the whole carry thing so I decided to take a practical self defense shooting class using my Star in the class. It had never failed me.

Class focused on using your off hand for defense. Shooting from retention, entering a room without getting your pistol snatched away from you. Practical type stuff. I was called in front of the class to go over shooting from retention. I was a little nervous being in front of the class. I was focusing on doing everything I was taught in the drill. I wanted to do the drill quickly and efficiently. I pushed away from the target with my off hand getting my hand high towards the face so I wouldn't shoot myself in the hand as I drew my pistol smoothly and efficiently against my body in the retention position barrel pointed center mass of the cardboard target. I angled the pistol away from me so the slide wouldn't catch my clothing. I pulled the trigger and.... noting. I forgot to disengage the safety. I had drawn and shot that pistol from condition 1 a thousand times not just life firing but dry firing as well. All it took was one time being a little nervous trying to be quick with my actions and my brain forgot to flick off the safety. A couple of months later I traded in my Star Model B on a Sig P228. I'm glad I learned that lesson the easy and somewhat embarrassing way.

No thumb safety version in 45APC ordered from Whittaker.

I've seen that happen in numerous training classes -- and even more so in pistol competitions.

It isn't difficult to learn how to deactivate a safety. What's difficult is to do it so many times that you can't possibly "F" it up under stress.

Several (quite a few) years ago an anonymous poll was conducted at one of the big national pistol matches, asking the competitors if they had "pinned" (deactivated) the grip safety on their 1911's.

The poll had to be confidential, because deactivating a safety device was an automatic DQ. Two thirds of the respondents said their grip safety was deactivated --- because under stress (and at high speed) they knew they might fail to disengage the safety.

These were the top shooters on the planet, but they knew from experience that speed & stress lead to malfunctions. Nobody that I know who trains "seriously" (has attended multiple training academies) carries a striker-fired pistol with an external safety. Except maybe Jerry Miculek. I didn't ask him (but he shot a Glock the two days that I trained with him).

Ordered a 9mm. I have been a Glock guy forever, but for $244 it's worth a try.

Anybody shot the 45 Shield? Snappy, muzzle flip, recoil?

Since no one really answered the question here and I ended up doing a lot of reading up on it last night I thought I would report my finding. I read a ton of reviews looking for this information. It's a 45 so it's going to kick. But the common consensus is that it is more of a "push" type recoil and is not snappy fastball to a the palm type recoil. Lots of commends about how mild the recoil is for a light weight compact 45. Of course it's a 45 so it will never be 9mm mild and it has some kick. I'll see how it compares to my Colt Government model and 686-6.

That's generally true of any pistol.

9mm is awesome.
40 is snappy.
45 is more a smooth push.

I just wasn't sure how such a narrow pistol and light weight 45 would handle. It's going to be a full lb lighter than my Government and 1/4" narrower.

It will be similar to the XDs45, which I've found to be a fine shooter. It's still easier to shoot the 9mm version but the 45 is just fine if you prefer the larger bore.

Gunbuyer and Whittakers sold out. GB has the thumbsafety left but don't want that one for the a forementioned reasons.

Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore has them for $239 after rebate --- gotta pay $5 extra to get it w/o thumb safety. (If you believe the laws of supply & demand, you'd deduce that there is greater demand for version that doesn't have the manual safety).

I just don't have a need for the. 45 although I'd like to have one. Can't use it for ccw. Not enough rounds for home defense. I don't compete. Just can't justify the cost.

I didn't really have a use either but I had less use for the 9mm so I went with the 45. I thought it felt better in my hand. Can get my pinky on the grip without having to use the bigger magazine. Liked the grip texture better. Justified it by saying I can use it for backpacking or as a backup woods pistol instead of carrying around a 3lbs 686-6.

And almost universally when people owned both the 9mm and 45 everyone said they preferred the 45 version.

After getting the 45, I might as well throw the 9 away. I could care less about it (the 9mm). My opinion of course. Feel free to disagree. As to control & follow ups, I do believe that those making comments should actually shoot the 45 Shield. It's much different than we'd expect. Sure surprised me! Seems that many others feel the same as I do.

quote:

I also prefer the Shield 45 to the Shield 9mm/40 (Yes I have both and have shot both) The 45 version is totally controllable, more so than one might imagine, for some reason this shield 45 fits my hand better, even though the Shield 9mm was a good fit the Shield 45 is a great fit.

quote:

I am the owner of a Shield 9mm and a Shield .45 which I just shot today. I shot 50 rounds of Remington 230 grain H.P. through it and all I can say is this thing is a *****cat. The trigger is vastly improved and the new grips flat work. I shoot it he best of my 3 single stacks. Rapid double taps are a breeze. If you have to rent or borrow one of each and shoot them to see what you shoot best. Don't assume the .45 will be hard to control until yo try one.

quote:

I have both and I prefer the .45 over the 9mm.

Now if S&W comes out with a 9mm with the more aggressive grip texture and grip length of the 45 with the increased 9mm capacity that might come with that I would be really torn.

quote:

It might be the vastly improved trigger feel and grip, and I know it is hard to fathom, but I think it is eaiser to shoot rapid than the 9mm. It would be interesting to shoot a 9mm with the new grip and trigger however.

quote:

First the Shield 45.....better trigger, better grip, better recoil spring assembly resulting in manageable recoil. and in my opinion better stopping/internal damage/and take down with less than perfect shot placement.

If you like the 9 and or 40 stay with it...you have no need of the 45. You may want one, but you don't need it.... WARNING !!!!! Do not touch the Shield 45 if you like your 9 or 40.....if you do your veins will fill with polymer, the force will consume you and you will become part of the collective against your will....Do not touch the Shield 45.

quote:

If you just hold it you will buy it. Its that nice.

That's what happened to me. At the shop decided to hold the 9mm and convinced myself I didn't need one. Held the 45 and decided I needed one.

quote:

You have read, you have understood, you have NOT listened.... We already determined you DO NOT NEED the Shield 45. You may go look at one, but only with supervision and you may only observe it while it is in a glass case. You may not touch it. We can not be held responsible for what happens if you do touch it.

quote:

Seriously ...... you will fall in love with it if you shoot it .... everyone has ..... including me ... sold my Shield 9 2 days after buying the 45 and knowing that was my EDC......

quote:

I've had my Shield 9 for two years, and love it. I never want a .45 carry gun because of the round capacity. That said... I ordered a Shield 45 yesterday from cabelas ($386 after tax) after I held one last weekend.

quote:

I have a pair of 9 Shields and regularly CCW one of them. I had an opportunity to handle the new 45 Shield and it feels better in my hand the 9. I always felt that the Shield 9/40 was just a bit to small and would of benefited from a little larger size, not much, but maybe a half inch or so in length and height and maybe a tad wider grip. The new 45 Shield does all that.

quote:

I consider the 45 as "version 2" of the Shield. Better feel, better trigger, better recoil spring. If you haven't put all the cost into the trigger replacement of the 9, grab the 45.

quote:

I own both, but prefer the Shield 45. Not saying Shield 9 is a slouch, but I've found the 45 to be more accurate, better trigger pull out of the box, and conceals the same.

quote:

I have both and love them, I prefer the 45 though

quote:

My 9 stays in the safe these days. The 45 is never stuck there.

quote:

I bought a .45 Shield. Didn't need it, but my curiosity needed massaging. It was. I was absolutely positively astounded by it. I don't say it's better than the 9, at least not for it's purpose, but it is absolutely as good. And for me, there was nothing not to like about the .45 if I could stand to shoot it in the Shield platform. I could ... in fact, I loved it! The trigger was better than my 9, the recoil was not noticeably more than the 9, shot recovery time was plenty good for predator control, and accuracy was as good or better than the 9. In fact, I shoot it a bit better than the 9.

quote:

Had Shield in 9mm. Liked it just fine. Carried it for about two years every day. Nice pistol for EDC. I tried a Shield .45 and liked that one even mo bedda. I spend each morning riding my mosickle alone out in the southwestern deserts. I like the .45 more for several obvious reasons and that one that has been left unmentioned which is that the .45 is a GREAT shotshell load for snakes and putting various small game in one's belly if having to walk out of the desert. Not a NEED usually, but a nice feature compared with the somewhat puny 9mm shotshells which have functioned well many times for me in the past. I just like the .45 better. Sold the 9mm .

quote:

The first time to the range with the .45 Shield I was sold. It is one of those handguns that just seems to fit my paw perfectly. Some firearms: shotgun, rifle or handgun are just like that. You pick one up and in second you know everything is just right for you. The 45 Shield is that way for me. It is comfortable like some of my old cowboy boots and jeans. It carries and conceals every bit as well as the 9mm. It feels much better in my hand. I love the more aggressive texturing of the grip. I would say the trigger on my .45 is a touch better than the 9mm. I'm every bit as accurate with the .45 and the recoil is very manageable allowing for a very quick follow up shot. So far I have not one complaint with the 45 Shield.

quote:

Had the 9 & sold it. Bought the 45 & love it and will never sell it.

quote:

First of all, there is no reason not to have both. Just shot both of mine this weekend. Like the 45 better.

quote:

Have the 9 & 45. The 9 is now for sale on consignment. The 45 has a much better trigger and for about the same capacity, I prefer the 45 ACP.
