There is no "face" on a spinning reel, so why would it be called open face.

Either way, on the boat, I'm usually referring to the reel by it's name.
ex: pass me my curado, calcutta, abu, etc.

Yeah, I say open face. I guess because I don't ever see grown men using closed face spinning reels.
