Looking to get 4-5 chickens (no roosters) to keep as back yard pets. Any recommendations on a good place to buy in the Baton Rouge area? Also, what breeds are recommended to keep as back yard chickens?

Thanks

Tractor supply or any feed store. Most should have chicks right now.

You want pullets, not straight run. Still pullets only guarantee about 90% accuracy, so for every 10 chicks, one will likely be a rooster.

We have dominiques, orpingtons and wyandottes.

Those are all egg layers.

My mom keeps 6-8 chickens and every year we lose one or two to a predator, or just general pecking order by the other chickens. We replace with new pullets, but the feed stores don't always carry the same breeds. Those just happen to be the 3 breeds we currently have...

I will say this, 6-8 chickens keeps my mom, her sister, myself(and my family of 4) and my sister with all the eggs we need. You start picking up 4, 5 or 6 eggs a day and you'll have a bunch of eggs by the end of the week.

I'd suggest 3 or 4 chickens to provide a standard 1 household family with all the eggs they'll ever need.

Exactly. We had 5 good layers for a family of 4 that eat a lot of eggs and before you know it, we'd have 4 or 5 dozen in the fridge.

I always just bought mine off Craigslist and only bought ones that just started laying. We'd pay around $10-15 per bird, but they were producing immediately. I'd recommend Rhode Island Reds, Red Stars, and if you want to mix in green eggs get a couple Americaunas or Araucanas. Some people call em Easter Eggers.

We have 4 chickens.

1 rhode island red, 1 buff orpington, and 2 silver laced wyandottes.

They're all good egg layers. We are averaging about 3 or a little less a day.

2 buff orphingtons
2 rhode island reds
2 cinnamon queens
2 blue/red lace wyandottes

i get 35ish eggs a week. Reds and cinn queens lay like their arse is on fire. I dnt see how they produce so much.

Buffs are one of the most relaxed chickens around. I have one that hops in the truck with me sometimes, like it wants to go for a ride.

I'm just hatching some chicks right now to test a new incubator. Need to adjust temp and humidity before next run, but we got 60% hatch. Bunch of mutts, mix between Buff and Welsummer roosters + Wyndottes, buffs, amereucanas, doms, welsummer, brahma etc hens.

Will likely start another run this coming weekend and 21 days later there will be chicks. No problem to throw a few more eggs into the incubator if you want some mixed breeds? We average from 12 -20 eggs a day, give plenty away to family and neighbors.

Tried craigslist a while back, didn't go well. Landy had over 300 chickens, swore she knew hen from roo at 3 weeks old. I bough 4 from her, only wanting hens, ended up with 3 roo's and 1 hen. Sold the roo's for $5 each and started over.

Ole Time Farm supply in Gonzales is my go to now, fantastic store and know thier stuff.

I have buff's, rocks, golden lace wyandotte, and Welsimer. Buffs are the most laid back.

Be careful with predators, hawks are the worse... plan to loose a few here and there.

Tractor supply generally only has straight run so you are taking your chances

check out old time farm supply in Gonzales on hwy 44, they sell sexed chicks and have multiple different breeds, and they will give you all the advice you could want
