It refers ti the length of the gas system, the little sliver tube that runs along the top of the barrel. I think you gave a carbine length

It says M4 Carbine on my gun

Unless something has changed recently Colt does not offer a mid length gas system on any of their rifles.

Good article Chris. I was taught to shoot my carbine the same way. Thumb on top of the rail and pointed at my target. Inside of 75' you can easily ring steel or person sized targets just by pointing your thumb at them. I also placed the pressure pad for my light at this spot. Keeps my rail clean and makes it damn handy for ultra quick target acquisition.

Changing out the grip and stock are really easy and a DIY even for a novice. There are like 20 different stocks you can choose and 10 different grips. I have found the Vltor EMOD stock offers the best combo of comfort, storage and being lightweight but that is my opinion. It took me 4 different stocks to finally figure it out. Remember to always buy quality stuff. Buy once cry once. Any NCStar, UTG, etc is dogshit and won't last.
I found m4carbine.net to be a great site. I like it better than AR15.com si m ply because it's a smaller site and the searches are much better for research.

I use to run the dual Surefire tape switch (one switch to control both my dbal and scout light).
After shooting VTAC nightfighter I've gone back to the clickable tail cap.
Once the Unity tactical TAPS switch comes out, I may go back to the pressure pad.
I need to be able to go constant white light and the current Surefire dual pad didn't allow that.
Thumb over bore really does come in handy when running the gun fast. I can really torque down and lock the rifle in.

Make sure your purchases are smart and calculated when modding your rifle. I see a lot of new AR owners loading up their rifles with crap only to strip them right back down. If you want a foregrip and a light that's most of what is needed. All the other millions of rails and tons of grips and toaster ovens that you put on the front of the rifle just makes it heavier and bulkier. Try to take a minimalistic approach and you'll thank yourself later.
If you want tips on modding your AR, check out my AR15 buyer's guide. 4 videos with details on each specific part:

Bap, I'm sure you've seen Nutnfancy's video on this, but to both reinforce this point and share with others:
You've got too much crap on your AR-15

Hold on to all your Original Colt parts & the Box. Keeps the re-sale value high.

Agree with this too. Sights, sling, and light. That's all you need, and in that order.

Àmmo & Mags are most important, for now.
