Damn, and I thougjt getting shot with a non lethal bean bag hurt.
That makes me think back to a jackass stunt where j knoxville and a couple others were sent down range and a explosive was detonated and shot hundreds of solid rubber balls the size of marbles at them. Messed them up good.

Modern houses have dry wall. Bucket shot of any size will penetrate the wall in both rooms, possibly killing someone in the adjoining room. I would use low brass 8's or 9's. Even at 10 yards, the damage to an intruder would be massive.~ Try a round into a piece of news paper. I think you will like what you see..

Really or #6 if you just feel you need a little more - at household ranges would hit as a solid mass, anyway. Unless the target is armored or very fat, 1 shot to the torso should end active resistance. You don't have nearly the risk of penetrating interior walls and causing collateral damage, always a problem in an occupied home or apartment complex.
Buckshot would be most lethal, but really better suited for outdoor situations where you can clearly see your target and beyond, and where the engagement range starts to get to the edge of the platform - 15 meters or so with shot. Likewise, a slug gun should be able to deliver at 40 to 45 meters, but would be even more of a threat to penetrate and kill the kids or neighbors if fired indoors.

We use door breaching rounds so it dont go through the walls and kill my kids

30 feet away does not pose an immediate threat
I think the court-proven distance is either 17 or 21 ft. Can't remember exactly. Nevertheless, in my house, if questioned, he was 8 ft and closing.
Although I think a 2 3/4" #6 from a 20 gauge will damn near cut someone's head off at 20 ft, I have no problem with anyone shooting 3" OO buck at an intruder. I keep some 3.5" hevishot coyote loads in my bedside gun. They'll kill anything that comes through the door.

I've got #3 buckshot in mine right now.
Once any part of an intruder's body enters my house, it's getting shot. If anybody asks if I feared for my life, I'll tell them I'm the extra nervous type.

3" magnum 00 buck in mine.
Those saying to use 7 or 8 shot don't understand. You run more risk of being sued if you shoot an intruder and he just ends up injured like that picture on page 1. If you really want to STOP a threat, use something with some arse behind it. Any variation of buckshot will do the job.
EDIT: Let me also clarify that I'm not saying you need to kill an intruder. But you definitely want to have the odds stacked in your favor. The chances of you STOPPING the threat, which is the ultimate goal, is much higher using buckshot and shooting center of mass.
At 20 feet or so, #7 or #8 won't carry nearly enough energy to do real damage. It will just pepper them. Watch this ballistic gel video:

And then watch this one when you up the size of the BBs:

And to those who say you can't shoot someone in your home, I call BS. If they are in your home and you didn't ask them to be there, I would imagine they aren't just coming in to say "hey." They're up to no good. Even the "shooting them in the back" thing is overdrawn. If they are in your home unwelcomed, they are a threat. Who's to say the intruder can't run away while shooting with the gun behind his back? He is STILL a threat. The castle doctrine is enough to protect you. Just use your head and your best judgment.
