have personal have witnessed ummm...... something..... shot with a slug out if a 870 in the ...lets see here.....stomach area....from a very close range.....get pretty much cut in half n lived.......
1 sabot vs 30 going down range, which would you prefer? No room for error with slug.

I'll take the buckshot. They can have all the slugs they want, bottom line is, if your woken up by an intruder in the middle of the night, you don't want much room for error. Buckshot makes it a little more difficult to not hit your target. IMHO
Of course "the sound of a shotgun being racked is bone chilling to intruders"
So you have to factor that in.

I really don't know why this has been argued for 4 pages. Want to know what the USMC used to clear Falluah, buckshot. We're talking sniff the hummus left in the raghead's beard close.

Exactly.
If you honestly think a slug is the answer for home defense, you should be using a rifle or pistol.
And it's a matter of degrees from there, to the #4 buckshot. I've patterned mine with an open bore 18 1/4" 12 gauge and inside my house, no way in hell I'm missing you and if it does overpenetrate the first wall of sheetrock, the second one it has to go through will slow it down enough that whoever it hits is not going to get killed like they would with larger buckshot.
#4 Buck is the perfect answer for home defense shotguns. Slugs shouldn't even be in the conversation.

Personally either is great ... both have advantages and disadvantages.......I've seen things go either way with both ....as long as the Lord keeps me kicking n alive to go home to see my family I don't care what I use as long as the threat is halted and or eliminated ...that's the main thing ........there's two stories on Nola if you look hard enough

Exactly, if youre gonna use a slug for HD in a shotgun, why not just use a rifle or pistola?
Buckshot is the answer, a family friend of ours who is a detective said a guy was attempting to rob someone, the home owner gave the perp got a dose of 00 buck from about 12 steps and it literally cut him in half.

I guess the eye rolling is your sarcasm.
Anytime someone says that quote I always ask the same thing, "After you've already fired a shot?" You shouldn't give up your position to rack in a round. Put yourself at the greatest advantage possible.

Yeah sarcasm to the max. Whenever someone says that, it irritates the hell out of me. Its so freaking retarded. The only time I'm rackin that shotgun with a crackhead in my home, is after buckshot has been dropped in him. FACT.
I obviously hope I never have to do that, but you can bet your sweet arse I'm not relying on a crackhead gettin scared bc I racked a shell in the chamber. There's already one in there.

Don't take this the wrong way ....but how many of y'all could actually pull the trigger ...this isn't ment to piss anyone off or question your manhood ....but just wondering .....it's good to hear so many would in the defense of their homes/loveones

My father was shot (not fatally, thank God) in an attempted robbery about 15 years ago. After seeing firsthand what kind of thugs are out there, I know for a fact, I would have no trouble defending my home. If it comes down to me/my family or a piece of shite. You can bet the house, I'm goin guns blazin. No doubt in my mind. Do I want to? absolutely not. Would I? Definitely.

That's good to hear.. though I'm very sorry for your father an experience that went along with it ..... being mentally prepared is the first and a very important step
Posted on 2/23/13 at 11:48 pm to sig2608
Thanks. It just showed me up close and personal that criminals don't play around and you have to be prepared to do whatever it takes to defend yourself and your family.

Amen.
I CC almost daily so I have gone through many different scenarios. I have never been in any sort of gun fight and I have never had to even draw my gun, but I am about 99.9% sure I would shoot if I felt I had to. Like JAB said, if it's some POS or my family/friends, it's gonna be the POS. I can't stand thieves and I can't stand criminals that prey on good people because they know they will not fight back. I may be a nice guy and it takes a lot to piss me off or put me in a defensive mindset, but I am not one of those guys that won't fight back.

I'm 100% positive I could. There are some evil people in this world. Now, I don't pretend to be such a hardass that it's not possible that I would be affected emotionally if I had to take a life. There are some people in the U.S. Military who are much tougher than me that have a hard time dealing with the taking of life. But I'm confident I could pull a trigger to save my wife/family.

Ill be the first to tell you it will effect you mentally ....that comes with the territory and by no means does that make you a weaker person, just shows you are a normally person n not a deranged physco lol

Without hesitation if all my criteria are met.
You being in my house meets them all. That's a dead man.

Exactly.
If someone is in my house, there will be no hesitation whatsoever. He will be getting a round or 2 of whatever ammo I decide on after reading this thread.
Back to serious, if he comes in my house past Alarm signs and locked doors then he has ill intent and I intend on giving him ill intent back through the barrel of a .12 gauge 870.
In a concealed carry situation outside of my house, it will require lots more thinking and I will try to avoid the confrontation at all costs.
I don't want to be put in either situation, but I'm pretty sure that shooting some a-hole that is inside my house isn't going to cause me any long term grief. I hope I never find out.
