Yea my buddies out west of Parkdale are bad slow. The big refuge north west of Mer Rouge is full of water now and holding a shite ton of birds. They’re moving around feeding in the fields and going back and roosting in that thing. It is totally loaded.

Can tell you that north of you in lake village a slow season turned on last Saturday and Sunday with a bunch of birds getting killed coming in on the weather. Mallards, greys, pintails mainly. Geese are thick again like they usually are.
I have family up there. We went there for thanksgiving and it was nothing but geese stacked along Hwy 82 between Montrose and Lake Village.

Geese weren’t really in the area first split but quite a few have come in now. From morehouse up to northeast arkansas there’s no shortage of specks any more - probably a ton of the birds that used to go to south la and south Texas.

I can tell you where they are not. Anywhere south of Lake Pontchartrain. Venice as usual has some. This is the worst year as long as I can remember

Yeah it was the worst first split I can recall. Went take a ride during the split and they had a huge pile of ringnecks on the leases to the west of mine. Hopefully they move around Saturday.

Rode around Delacroix and hopedale, not looking great. An arse ton of buffleheads and mergansers. Have yet to see any dogs. Couple greys here and there.
Yet I’ll be there bright and early Saturday morning

Two friends just got back Sunday have spent 8-9 days in Oklahoma pan handle and came back with 22 ducks on 7 hunts. They were very disappointed. They make that trip every year first week of December and have for 10+ years. Just no ducks. If you didn't have flooded corn you didn't have ducks. They drove hundreds of miles over the best places in Oklahoma and it was just nothing. Many dry field hunts they make every year were not even worth trying the guides told them. Lots of time and money spent and just nothing.

Saw maybe 30 ducks in one pond near the highway, and only one group of geese near Bunkie. That’s it.

I think the duck population is way down and has been trending down over the last few years. But the USFW doesn’t want to admit it since there is big money in licenses, stamps, gear, etc. etc.
I have hunted flooded timber in Arkansas for the last 30 years. I have seen low water, high water, warm temps, cold temps, etc. In the past, there have always been ducks. Were there slow days at times? Sure there was. But there were always ducks flying and holding your interest on those days. But mostly there were days where you were confident that you were going to kill ducks.
The slow days with zilch in the bag have steadily increased. And the days with only 1 or 2 ducks have increased also. This year is the worst of all. There have been days when we didn’t even come close to calling at a duck much less killing one.
The USFW sets guidelines for the states to use with regard to the length of season and bag limits. Of course, the states are going to use the max possible within the guidelines. When the duck numbers were down, there was only a 30 day season and a point system was used for your limit. The point system was replaced later with a 3 duck limit. When the duck numbers increased in the mid-90s, they increased the season to 60 days with a 6 duck limit.
I am confident the duck numbers are down again but they will not cut back on the season and bag limit. Hell...you could have a 50 duck limit now and it wouldn’t matter. You can’t kill what’s not there. There is too much money involved to lose duck hunters by reducing the length of the season and decreasing the bag limit like it was when the duck population was down.

We were in Kansas for 5 days after Thanksgiving. Over 40 ducks on a private family farm in 5 or 6 rag-tag hunts with some sh**ty decoys. No flooded fields or any man-made impoundments. Just hunting irrigation ponds, dry fields, or low spots holding a few inches of water in harvested corn. Almost limited out (4 people) during a blizzard. Snowstorm for them, blizzard for some coonasses. Plenty of birds in the area then. Got a call that they’re even thicker than the geese now. Most ducks in the area than they’ve seen in a few years. The birds are figuring out where there’s little to no pressure. I can count on one hand how many times we heard other shots besides our group. There’s plenty of birds, people just need to put forth the effort to go get them if they want to be successful. Sitting around and complaining about it on a forum ain’t going to get it done. Tons of public land where the birds want to be and many times farmers will grant access to private land if you’re respectful. It really helps if you have something to share that they can’t get, like boudin or fresh cracklins.
Complaining about no birds is like complaining about not finding a job. They don’t come to you, you have to go to them. They may not be where you want them to be, but they’re out there. I hope everyone has a great second split.

so you make a post about hunting a private family farm and then tel people to get out, stop bitching, and hunt public?
