I grew up hunting around my dad and had the luxury of him calling all the birds. I’ve got a few cheap calls but I’m looking to get something new.

What’s an easy all around call to use?

Many people will recommend the haydels dr-85. It's an excellent call. Double read, easy to blow and cheap.

I'd take another step up and blow the haydels red leg rl-99. Excellent acrylic call with a wide range and easy to blow. The redleg is just a fantastic damn call in all conditions.

Both good recommendations so far. I like the Haydel's Dirty Rice call. I like that rasp.

Don't get caught up in the marketing of those $120 calls. I've always used Haydel's and killed plenty. Its about knowing when to call and when to shut up. Also get you a whistle. Best call they have.

In addition to the Haydels mentioned I’ll recommend the Primos wench as a good one.

Just because it is cheap doesn’t mean it can’t sound good. It’s all about how you blow it.

Disclaimer: I suck at calling.

I had trouble with the dr85. The Buck Gardner Double Nasty is what was easiest for me.

Haydels Gadwall

I've been hunting with many people who "can call" all of them use a Mallard call when theres no Mallards around. Went with a buddy of mine one day and he had this Haydels call. I'm like man we ain't going to kill shite today. Ended up back at the dock for 7:20 with our limit of Greys, went the next couple days and same results. This guy I went with didnt call till the ducks flew over, he hit a couple tats on it and they were circling around to see what they missed. Best duck hunt of my life.

Haydels Gadwall

I've heard from several people and read on many forums that a gadwall call is deadly on grays. Yet for the life of me I have never seen it have any impact. I don't know if it's because I'm doing something wrong or if I hunt in Oklahoma where there are more mallards and so ducks in general respond better to a suzie vs places where grays are the dominant duck.

It's because Grays pick a spot and are going to land there no matter what they hear

Duck commander double reed.

I use an old wooden for feeding/clucking

I’ve got an old plastic reacher I use for hail calls.

Double reeds are just naturally raspy for me. They are a lot easier to blow, to me.
