Seriously 20 posts and nobody mentions a rifle??? Shotguns are for the birds, quite literally.

AR15 or AK47 from a quality supplier. They are easy to use and designed to stop man sized targets. Shotguns are not just point and shoot, follow up shots are going to have a much larger learning curve and are much more difficult to operate in a stressful situation. AR and AK, put the enemy in the circle behind the post and pull. Follow up shots are quick. Ammo designed to stop humans is still readily available, however quite pricey, but if you have none just pay the buck a round (half that for AK). I have seen good guns in stock for precovidiotdemic pricing from SOGLW. SOLGW is feeding their dealer network. If you go AK, PSA is putting up AK's almost daily M-F for under $1k for the most part, the PSA AK's have been vetted by quite a few people, not a few round, buts tens of thousands of rounds from multiple sources.

Please don't tell them to get a Shotgun, there is a reason those are the only guns sitting on shelves right now. The only place any .mil or .gov force is using them for is to breach doors and for less than lethal options. There are much better ways to breach a door and less than lethal options have proven to be potentially lethal anyway.

I respectfully disagree with the AR.

We are talking about presumably very young people here who will be very freaked out if they ever have to use the weapon.

I watched two guys on the range yesterday. Both are closely related to me. One was a VERY highly ranked shooter nationally in his day.

Both had just shot sub-moa groups (surprise) on the 100 yard range earlier.

Both wanted to empty a pistol mag at close range. Neither of them shot well. Neither of them are trained pistol shooters. If they would have been shooting at a live person, I bet they would have missed 50%.

I feel like in a highly stressful situation, the rifle much like the handgun requires skill and presence of mind.

Shotgun makes a big boom. Shotgun puts multiple holes in people. As many holes as possible stops the bad guys.

Right now, today...they can pick up a shotgun anywhere for a normal price AND walk right over and grab a box of shells to go get a little practice. They can probably find a handful of better defensive rounds like buckshot or slugs (maybe)....but I’m sure they can locate a suitable load like turkey/duck shells that (imo) would make a mess of whoever gets the wrong end of.

The first thing I personally will grab is my AR for home defense, but if the 870 is picked up first...it’ll do just fine.

Agree that a shotgun is the answer, but avoid a side by side with a double trigger. Those can be tricky.

For starters, I'm not disagreeing that using any weapon can result in very poor results by an untrained person.

But using poor handgun performance (by admittedly untrained persons) RAPID firing to say that it would translate equally to a rifle is asinine.

By default rifles are more accurate than pistols.

As someone who's rapid fired both I can say that doing so with a rifle (5.56) is much more accurate.

And to top it off, you fail to mention any downfalls of a shotgun, which have been discussed above.

FWIW, I think an AR is the right suggestion here.

-high capacity
-more accurate than a pistol/shotgun
-controllable
-easy attachments of accessories (light!)
-user friendly (flip switch down and pull trigger)
-can be suppressed (yes auditory exclusion is a thing, I know)

Weatherby Semi auto 12 guage 5+1

. In stock. $450. Get a light and/or a red dot to go in the rail and they are in business.

Shells available (may be bird shot but they still work)

Get within 10 yards, pull the trigger and bad guy goes bye bye.

A pump would be best but for someone with no experience they need something that you can just pull the trigger and unload.

A glock 17 would also be perfect but don't waste the money on an inexperienced shooter. They won't hit shoot with it and Defense loads are nowhere to be found.

Because they are choosing a combat weapon. Combat/offensive use is far different than home defense. Id never want a shotgun for going out to get somebody. Its great when indoors and somebody is trying to get you.

Youth model 20 ga. I prefer the Remington 1100. If they’ve never shot one before go out to a range or somewhere in the woods and practice aiming to get the feel for it. Practice with target load but have it ready to go with 00 buckshot. Target load or Dove load won’t do enough to eliminate the threat

hand guns

Id request they go handle some of them. I do not know the strength of your daughter. You'll want her to be able to pull the slide on the gun, etc. Bought a Shield 2.0 in 380 for my wife because she did not have the strength to operate the other pistols.

A big mean dog, imo, is still the best alarm system and home protection there is.

After that a revolver would be second layer of defense for someone with no firearm experience.

The ruger .380 is very difficult to rack IMO. I got my mother the M&P and it’s a very easy gun to handle.

Agreed, but unlike a gun there is the liability of it biting someone who doesn't need biting.

I know a guy who has two German shepherds that are professionally trained and he definitely does not have to worry about anything getting stolen.

Dumping an ar mag inside a multi family dwelling could mean more risk for neighbors

People don’t think about that but I will say this...having gone through multiple properties that have been shot up bullets don’t seem to penetrate like movies would have you believe. They ricochet and break apart more than anything...unless you have armor piercing rounds.

At less then 10 yards a shotgun is no different than a rifle, you don’t aim, you miss.

Whatever shotgun fits her best.
A youth model 410 has a lot going for it in a home defense/break-in situation especially if you're sharing a wall with a neighbor.
Lots of ammo varieties, easy/fun to shoot, light & mobile, and not as much risk of over penetration.
Possible downsides are ammo cost & local availability.
