What would you suggest for home protection?

A young couple near and dear to me would like to know.
Never had a gun.
They don’t want to carry or leave their apartment with it.
They just want something to have in their home in case somebody tries to break in.
They live in a duplex second floor.

Youth pump 20g.
Short. Deadly. Chicks can shoot it well.
Can be had real cheap.
Stay away from Remingtons these days.

The shotgun recommendations are good - 20 gauge buckshot is the proper load (they will probably have to order it, since most types of ammo are scarce) .
Make sure they understand that hitting a target across a room isn't like in the movies. They will have to aim - the pellets may not spread out more than 3-4 inches (depending on the gun/choke/shell).
So what this means is they'll need to actually go to a range and shoot a rounds.

A cheap aluminum bat (32-34") and quality LED flashlight with a titanium body will work too.

12 gauge point and pull trigger

I knew this was the right place to come.
Thank y’all.
It’s my daughter and I’m not a gun guy.

Mosberg pump shotgun. 20ga youth model.
They should practice with it. Hunters take for granted that using a pump is 2nd nature to them but it is not 100% fool-proof.

I like your choice. The reason I went with the side by side is its ultra simplicity.

Concur with shotgun recommendations, right now ammo is hard to find, especially buckshot and slugs. Birdshot in close quarters will work well, and will be less likely to penetrate through walls. The lower the number, the better.

What hand guns if they want both shotgun and hand gun

Not a pump.
Is it more reliable than an auto?
yes, but in the hands of an experienced shooter.
Whats more likely is someone forgetting to actually do the pumping, or short cycling it in the heat of the moment.
I'd prefer a semi auto. The chances of it jamming are slim and allows the shooter to focus on less operations.
With all home defense weapons, do not overlook a mounted light to switch on. Middle of the night, you want good target identification and a way to SEE

Glock 17
Sig p226
Sig p320
S&W M&P9 full size
S&W 686+
Ruger SR9
Ruger GP100 7 shot
It's a saturated market but there will be slim pickings in this climate

Mossberg Maverick Security.
Cheap and Effective.
I would load it with how ever many (should be 12) of those half size Aguila buckshot shells.
You could damn near make a small contingent think twice when you start spraying with 12 12ga shells.
