Combat/offensive use is far different than home defense. Id never want a shotgun for going out to get somebody. Its great when indoors and somebody is trying to get you.
The OP needs to listen to this.^^

And to this:

They should practice with it. Hunters take for granted that using a pump is 2nd nature to them but it is not 100% fool-proof.

Newbies need to develop the muscle memory (neural pathways/habit) of racking the gun after each shot. It's not an automatic response (no pun intended) for a lot of people. Short-stroking a pump shotgun is a thing.

Will there be less recoil with a shotgun if using a stock/pistol grip combo vs a regular stock? I have a bad shoulder that the recoil may break.

There is lower recoil shotgun ammo...but good luck finding it.

If I had a bad shoulder- I’d forget the shotgun altogether. Go AR.

I was, but I don't want to spend my money on something that I will either have to pay tax on or get it taken away. I don't have a boat.

If he shoots that AR indoors, he better have a suppressor on it or be wearing good hearing protection. Serious hearing loss is possible.

Get 2 shot guns and no hand guns . No need for a hand gun in home defense. If your worried about the gun jamming see about adding a bayonet.
