Had a giftcard to academy, and picked up a Thompson Center Compass in 6.5. Will be used as a deer rifle when i hunt some long powerlines, and as a backup in kentucky for bean fields. I have several other riles, so this will not be a primary rifle.. just situational. Was wondering what magnification/size scopes you guys that have them already are usuing

I have a Leica 2-10x50 on my Bergara B14 HMR in 6.5 Creed. Love it.

I’ve always thought getting quality glass is more important than having a 50mm objective. Plus I prefer my scopes to ride high and the larger objective can require it depending on the rifle.

Got a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x by 40mm on my AR10. Does a great job and is super clear.

likely order the Ruger American in 6.5
I have a Nikon Scope in the safe that will top it.

i agree.. I have nothing but leupolds and nikons on all my rifles. But was just wondering what everyone is using to get the most out of thr 6.5. It is a nice long range round and i dont want to limit it. I have places im looking 500+ yds

At 500 yards you will be more limited by your DOPE and shooting fundamentals than your scope. Are you planning on dialing in yardages or using subtentions to hold over at 500? Maybe I'm out of line but if you don't have enough experience shooting past 200-300 yards to know what type of scope you want you probably shouldn't ethically be taking those shots. Dial in a max point blank range for your rifle and keep your shots inside of that range unless you can practice a lot and learn the proper knowledge base and shooting fundamentals it takes to hit a 9-10" kill zone at 500+ yards. That means practicing the shooting position you will be using in the field not sitting at a sturdy table sticking your rifle on some sand bags and shooting at a static bullseye 500 yards away.

not out of line at all. Perfectly legit question. While i do not take 300-500yd shots all of the time. I have regularly took 200-250yd shots. I have made 350yd shots on white tail in bean fields in kentucky. I was just stating that i know what the rifle will do, and i have areas i can stretch it if need be. Just curious as to what magnification others are using on their 6.5. This wasnt about me attempting 500yd shots on the reg. I am perfectly comfortbale at 300yards.

lets be honest, that's gonna be a "guest gun" for when your buddy who doesn't hunt wants to try and kill something

get a Prostaff 5 3.5-14 for $450 and be done with it. that'll be plenty

If you're really considering shots on whitetail deer to 500 yards, I'd first look at a variable w/ 12X-14X on top end and use a "bullet drop" type reticle. If the 12-14X scope isn't powerful enough after you've shot it some, I'd go to a 16X. Like bapple, I prefer 40 mm scopes, but I do have a few 44 mm scopes on varmint guns. I've got a 56 mm scope (came on a gun I traded for) on a varmint gun and it's so big it's ugly. And be sure you use a good scope base and rings I prefer Weaver 1 piece bases and Burris Signature Z Rings (the ones w/ the plastic inserts). To shoot at 500 yards, you may need to get a special base.

FFP all the way on the Creedmoor. Just my opinion.

FFP not because it's a Creedmore because he is going to use subtentions on his rifle for bullet drop. If I were relying on the reticle subtentions for bullet drop I would not want to be limited to only the maximum magnification to use the subtentions on a field rifle. I know I'm rarely at max magnification on a scope on a hunting/field rifle.

I bought a Leupold VX 3i in 4.5x14-50 with the Boone & Crockett reticle and 30mm tube for my .280AI build. This rifle will be used mostly for antelope hunting in Wyoming mostly.

I've killed deer at 462 (measured) with a 3x10-50 one inch tube VX3 using "Kentucky" elevation. I was across the hood of a Jeep and had a hunting coat under the gun.

Whatever you get, take it to that power line this summer and see what it does. We put yardage markers out at some of our long distance stands. Nice not having to worry with the range.
