Just getting back into fishing after long layoff, got some 17 lb line the other day....thinking that is probably too much. Still using an old reel, and couldn't find on it any recommendations.

17lb seems wayyyy to high. I use 4-6 but then again I am a bad arse.

Yeah after I bought it...I thought that was way too high. I'm thinking maybe 8-10lb. This is the reel I'm using....like I said it has been awhile since I've fished. Reel seems to still work pretty good.

Probably 10, but I use 12 so I can fish the salt as well.

I use 12 for bass, 17 to 20 for catfish, 6-8 for white crap-o-lait and bream, 4 for my leader on my fly rod.

There's no one size for all situations. That being said, if I had to pick one size, I'd roll with 12 lb.

totally depends on where you are fishing, what baits, what depth, which line and type of line, and your ability to properly play a fish. I usually fish no less than 8 on a baitcaster and no more than 20.

For a good general purpose line on a do everything rod for fishing ponds with minimal structure I would go with Andes 10 lb mono. For heavier grass I like trilene big game in 12 or 15.

I would not use flouro unless you will only be fishing sinking biats.

I would consider braid if you fish lots of grass and you could go as low as 10 lb but less than that on a bait caster and it tends to dig or bite into the spool when you set the hook making the next cast more difficult.

12 mono or braid equiv. (see below) for clear reservoirs/lakes/streams/rivers.

15 -17 mono or braid equiv. diameter (10 - 30 etc.) for flooded reservoirs w/lotsa trees & bottom tree structure (old or new reservoir) or heavy cover bayous/rivers/streams.

Per advice earlier, no need to exceed 20 (mono, braid equivalent or other) for bass fishing.

Also, common sense reigns supreme. If you are not bottom fishing (worms, jigs, other similar) go with the lighter line option(s). Need I elaborate?

IMO. Just trying to help...

I use to use 17lb mono for everything except perch jerkin. It certainly isnt the best but it will work.

If I could only use one line the rest of my life, it would be 12 lb big game. Its what I use for most of my set ups.

mine would be 15lb yozuri hybrid. We've caught 30lb reds on it, ling on it, mangrove on it, I could go on and on... I'm a fan
