In my part of the country it is a bowfin. It is said that not even gators will eat them.

Everyone is correct. Bowfin

“ The choupique (pronounced shoe-pick) he was referring to is the same creature that biologists call “bowfin” and North Louisianans call “grinnel.” Bass fishermen loathe them, too often slamming the hook home on what they think is a tournament-winning fish, only to find that the ferocious fight is being delivered by a lowly choupique”

Side note: first fish I ever caught as a kid when my Dad took me fishing for the first time - made me throw back b/c it’s wasn’t good to eat - I was some upset. But then I went on to become a fisheries biologist.

They will destroy a crappie jig. Also, not bad eating if cleaned alive, cut into small chunks and deep fried.

I was on a church picnic type of thing on the banks of the Beouf River when I was a wee lad. As typical, I had my Zebco 33 with a spinner bait on it. And I went to the river bank and actually caught a bass. After getting over the horror of my dad making me chunk it back, I resumed fishing. A few minutes later I hooked up with another bass. Except it was funny looking, and when I lipped it to get my spinner bait out of its ugly mouth I ruined the picnic with my blood curdling screaming and carrying on. Lessons were learned that day...

I'd forgotten about that name for it.
Thx.
