I can kill enough deer during gun season...however it is fun to watch the guys get the shite kicked out of them when sighting them in for the season.

I bought one a few months ago and we couldn't get it sighted in for some reason. Took about 15 rds. My shoulder still hates me

Can't wait to get to use it in less than 2 weeks

Nice caliber, but a 30.06 is a more versatile choice.

Pair a 30.06 with a 375 H&H and you are good to go anywhere.

Fellow posters got one in his family that I've used for "primitive." It's an awesome gun with tons of knock down power.

Check your scope rings.

Mine kicked so hard it was sliding the scope forward about 1/8 of an inch per shot.

It requires good double band rings to hold it in place.

I have taken dozens of animals with this caliber. Hunted all over Africa with it, including plains game, a lion, and a leopard.

While I think it could work fine for a brown bear, I prefer the step up to a 375. Of course, there is no substitute for proper shot placement. But a brown bear is heavy and tough animal. You need some good penetration unless your shot placement is good.
In Africa, I have also used a 7x57 for smaller plains game. And I've stepped up to 416 Rigby, 375, and 470NE for large dangerous game.

TL/DR: I love my 35 Whelen

.375 h&h is probably the most versitile big game caliber on the planet.

I wish there were more .38 loads out there. I would love to have a nice Marlin 336 in .38-55

Excellent whitetail cartridge. Dropped ever deer I have shot with it. Kicks pretty good. Imagine 30.06 in a crack barrel

I take it by all of the talk about how much it kicks, most of the experience here has been with crack barrel rifles (which may have something to do with primitive hunting regs?).
Mine is a well balanced, Mauser bolt action. I don't find that it kicks much at all.
Each rifle likes different ammunition, but I have Superior Ammo load mine with Woodleigh soft nose. I've been very happy with the performance.

Sadly, I don't think many rifle makers chamber for the 35 Whelen anymore. I'm sure some custom makers do, but off the shelf I think you are limited to Remington's auto loader, and what little H&R's are left.
I like the caliber, but don't have use for it besides "primitive" hunting in Louisiana.

If I was ever to get an elk rifle, it would be on my short list of calibers.

Remington used to make the pump 7600 in it (along with some other very cool calibers)

I love those 7600's

I bought the TC .35 whelen and now hunt with it year round, regardless if it is premitive season or not. I've killed 7-8 deer with it and none have taken a step.
