12ga buckshot will lay them down with the rest. You're just limited to 3-5 rounds. Which in all honesty 3-5 good shots is more than you'll get unless you're in the middle of an open field.

The people unloading 30+ rounds at hogs are getting 2 good shots and 28 spray and pray

A guy I know that kills as many or more hogs than anyone does it with a recurve bow. Gets close and starts shooting.

I've shot a 320 lb. Sow at 5ish yards with 3" 00 and none of the buckshot made it through the fat. Most hogs arent half that size but if they're big, buckshot is absolutely not what you want. I hit it square in the face with a load and it knocked it out, still wasnt dead. Pig had over 40 buckshot in it (another guy was shooting also) when it was over. Very very unimpressed. I would have much rathered have a rifle.

I've actually done this twice.

First time it was raining and I was just slipping around doing some scouting. There were saw palmettos everywhere. I walked through a row of them into a herd of about 20 of the little bastards. I just stood still and waited on them to wander off. Seemed like hours but it probably only took about 20 minutes.

Second time, I had shot one out of a shooting house right at dark. I got down to go get it (it ran about 30 yds back to the woodline before it fell). I again, bust through the palmettos and into a herd of about 10 or so wondering what happened to their buddy laying there kicking. I'm deaf in one ear and the other eardrum is has a hole in it so I can't hear very well. It was dark by this point so I just pointed at the closest one and hip shot at it. Thankfully , they ran off.

Both times scared the shite out of me, especially the first one. Now, when I hunt my buddy's farm I carry my 9mm with the 17rd clip.

Hogs aren't going to just randomly charge you

No - but the risk is that you startle them, particularly big sows with shoats and piglets, the pack scatters and, not blessed with great vision, they run over you. Once on the ground, any big boar is going to frick you up.

Plus, if they feel cornered or directly threatened (depending on how you come up on them), you could face a particularly aggressive and protective boar and have a bad, bad day as well.

You're right in that this fear of aggressive hogs is probably overblown and fairly unlikely for even avid outdoorsmen. But, wild hogs are incredibly dangerous and large male specimens could decide that you have to go and have the ability to accomplish it under a wide range of circumstances.

Depends how close, shotgun loaded with buckshot or AK/AR would be what I would want.
