I've never served, but I'm pretty sure sidearms in combat units are an afterthought. Like Brass said, if your rifle goes down and you have to pull a handgun out, you're in trouble

This.

Of course we all bitch about the M9, but very rarely is a pistol used in combat. It's pretty much an Oh shite weapon. At least for the grunts an other frontline units. Most don't even carry a sidearm. Now maybe guys like SO and MPs and what not might prefer something else.

The military doesnt care whats best. They care about quantity, how many soldiers can we arm for x amount of dollars while maintaining combat effectiveness. Now units that have a budget and get to award their own contracts thats a different story. Personally, I think the Military should go back to the .45 or dump the silly notion of not using personal defense ammunition.

^ This or the hk45c which can hold the 10 rd elephant foot mags. Same configuration used by some special forces as the Mark 24.

Stove-pipes all the fricking time.

Is that your experience with a new or used one? What generation M9?

I remember getting the M9s brand new in the crates in '89 and being impressed by the lack of stove-piping compared to the 1911s. I didn't like anything else about the M9, but the lack of stove-pipes really stands out in my mind.

I used and oversaw their use for another 6 yrs till I retired. In those latter years I was a chief small arms instructor and noted the lack of M9 stovepipes compared to 1911s with trainees. I had to direct the line instructors to manually create stovepipes so the trainees could get some experience clearing them.

Maybe it's perspective. The old blown-out 1911's we were retiring stove-piped like hell.

sucks for lefties.

But there are probably a dozen choices that would work. .45 does make sense since you're stuck with ball ammo

I thought military pistol had to have safety and a decocker??
only because someone decided.

But whne you give a gun to millions of people, it doesn't make a lot of sense to have them thumbing down the hammer.

This was discussed earlier. They can't use personal defense ammo only FMJ. That's how we know all that ammo purchased by DHS is for domestic use.

Prolly from that movie where that Marine ate one in the locker room. Forget the name. He was obsessed with his "weapon" and spoke himself about FMJ.

And the name of the movie was...

Full Metal Jacket

And don't you forget it, numbnuts!

They were old. The military isn't gonna hand out brand new M9s. I don't think I've ever seen an issues firearm that was brand new.

I have shot a new one and its better. Still don't like the thing though.
