It's a charter boat with a 2018 Yamaha 300 with 900 hrs, 400 of which are idle hours. Its still under factory warranty for 8mo and I could get an extended. Should I have any worry's about buying this boat. I'll probably only put 50-100hrs a year on it at most.

First I've ever seen or heard someone split up the hours between idle and run time. How would they ever determine that except for a flat out guess?

Charter engines get pushed hard but at least you know that maintenance and repairs are done on time.

The ECM printouts will give you all that information and more.

I wouldn't be worried at all about 900 hours on a 4 stroke if the price is good.

Probably new computers. I know my dad's 2021 Yamaha 200 sho VMAX will tell you every single hour at a given rpm.

Its a good price for what it is. I'm just newer to boat OWNERSHIP and trying to do my research.

Some people feel like high hours in a short time is better than low hours over a long time.

Have it checked out, but don't let the hours scare you. If it was well maintained and treated well itll last over 4000 hours.

buy it knowing you are buying the boat and trailer only, and the motor is free, because with the hard use it had, consider that motor to already be passed 50% of its lifespan. after all, that is why they are selling it

im not saying the motor wont last, im saying its not something you should assume will last, or expect it to last.

charter boat motors get used hard, and arent well maintained as far as motor flushing, because they dont keep them long enough, for it to matter at all to them.

buying a used charter boat is like buying a car at the rental car place, no one cared enough to take care of it the way an owner would take care of their own boat.

if the price is good and reflects you will need to replace that $18k engine in less then 5 yrs then buy it.

buying a used charter boat is exactly like buying an old taxi cab if you need a car

why is the owner selling it with 900hr. Guides usually try for 3000.

That particular model has been associated with catastrophic flywheel failures and yahama has a recall.

I am surprised there is still warranty available because of the commercial application. Yamaha would only give me 12 months on a new 2018, 225 because of that use.

Check the exhaust manifold for corrosion leaks. Cost my son 2500 bucks to repair on his.

If you do buy it and have first stage fuel pump problems, use an after market pump at 125 bucks rather than 650.

Using it for only 50 hours per year will not extend the life. A well used boat boat is more reliable

What I was told is the charter Captain bought a new boat. The boat's hull is an 04 with a 2018 motor.

Check out the fuel tank, mine was an 03 proline with an aluminum 140 gallon gas tank. Water condensation on the inside wall was a real problem. After sitting in the garage on the coast for 6 months it would have1-2 gallons of free water in the gas tank. Sumping out we finely figured out how to do it in 30 minutes.

That’s one of the best 300’s made. It will go 3000 hours easily. Only thing that id be concerned with is lower unit. Try to see if it’s original or been replaced. Seems yammys blow them when they get higher hours or abused a little bit. 900 hours on a 2018 Yammy definitely wouldn’t push me away from buying though. Great engines.

The 300 didn’t have flywheel issues, that’s the 350.

What hull are we talking about

Probably selling it for tax purposes and buying new.

That motor is fine. You will probably never clock an additional 900hrs on it... I find I clock very little time on my big motor, my trolling motor in spot lock probably has 3X as many hours on it...

I know plenty of people that beat the shite out of their 300 yammys and they go over 3k hours. Like I said lower is the main weak point, and I’d be way less concerned with that on bay boat.

Got a set of 3 with 800 hours going on our boat, and I have no worries with it. Don’t let the hours keep you from buying boat

Wish I was in your position to own a set of 3 on my boat lol!!! But I definitely appreciate the response. I'm gonna check it out this weekend to see it in person and see what I will get on my trade in.

Like I said, 300 yammy is an absolute workhorse. Especially with warranty. If hull is in good shape and price is right, no reason to walk away.

The worst thing I think you can do to a boat is let it sit in storage for a long time. I make sure to take time with my boats every couple months even in winter to run them for about 20 minutes. I really don’t winterize them other than draining the water out of the engine after use. I like to run the engine out of fuel on an outboard as well by pulling the line off and letting it run out before putting it in storage
