Used 2003 Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4 worth buying?

I’ve been looking for a used 4wheeler for the deer lease. Everything out there seems overpriced or they have snorkels and look like hell. A former member of the deer lease decided to quit and wants to sell his 2003 Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4 to me. He said that it will turn over with starter fluid but dies. Seems like it just needs a carb rebuild and tune up. He’s asking 1k which I think is a good deal. Anyone have experiences with this unit?

If the tires are decent it's worth that.
Clean the carb and tank and you're good to go.

I'd risk 1k if it doesn't look like hammered dog shat. Should be perfect for dragging out dead animals, checking trail cams and hauling a couple sacks of corn

That's a good deal it seems. Bought an 03 grizzly for $400 a while back, fixed it up and made a few 1000 on it.

I would feel him out, as to , was he the one who bought it new, ask him about maintenance. What kind of oil he used. Who did it. Not that you need to know type of oil, but you are looking to see if he can immediately rattle off oil type and weight, which tells you he did indeed have a vested interest in upkeep, and is not just bland’ly answering you.
Look at hours vs miles. There is a way to do math with one vs the other, and it tells you if the bike mostly operated at traveling speed, or creeping speed, like farm work.
The carb ( I assume it is a carb ) can be removed and tanked in a can of Berryman, and a rebuild kit put in.
For comparison, in 2019, I drove out of the Suzuki Showroom with a brand new 400 King Quad for 5300.

I think he was the second owner but ran it on the deer lease for at least 10years… did all the maintenance himself so I think it was well maintained. He was overseas for the past year and it sat unused. The tires seem fine and it also has a winch which works.
I wanted to buy a Honda but can’t find one at a decent price. But since I “know” the owner and he’s vouched for by the main baw that organizes the lease, I think it’s a good gamble.

Even an aftermarket Chinese carb should be cheap as dirt. Better off rebuilding the Japanese carb though.

I bought a used 2007 Big Bear. It runs strong and well as long as I keep the carb clean.

This is exactly what I have. It was ridden hard for about 10 years and has done more farm-work type use the last 10 or so but it still runs great. I would definitely risk $1000 on it.

I have the same bike. But I believe mine is a 2001.
I would definitely pay $1000 for it. I’ve read that Yamaha rubber (bushings and such) holds up better than Honda. I assume the 03 has IRS so it should have a nice smooth ride too.

I have an 01 too, and I would immediately jump on that bike.
Keep running non-ethanol fuel, drain the carb in the offseason, and maybe have to buy an occasional CDI once every 10 years, and there's your maintenance.

If you don’t buy it, let me know!

It’s worth it. Keep the oils changed and it’ll treat you good.
Do NOT put an Amazon carb on it. Rebuild the factory one or have someone who knows how do so.

I would grab a compression gauge from the auto store and test compression and check vs numbers online.
It can tell you a lot for an easy check.
I would absolutely clean carb and tank and maybe change the fuel shutoff valve under the tank. They have a screen that can gum up in there. Pull it and look at it at least.
It's very often overlooked and can cause you problems. Fixed 3 bikes for guys just on the fuel shutoff gummed up and starving their new rebuilt carb.
One guy wanted to sell me his recon dirt cheap not to frick with it. I couldn't take the deal in good conscience and talked him into letting me help him get it running.
I feel like karma is a real thing.
