I’ve got a 17’ boat with a 90 hp and want to pull the kids on a tube. Anyone know where to hook up the harness on the boat? My transom u bolt tie downs are pretty close to the motor and sit low. Also have stern cleats on the rear gunwales. I’m worried about the tie downs being too low and close together. Recommendations?

Attach on transom hooks and get a booster ball

Back in the day I just tied to one of the transom tie downs. This was on an 18' Shadow that sat really low in the water and didn't have any problems.

All you need is something like above for $12. The float thing is there to keep the rope out of the prop (in theory)

I pulled my daughter (and her buddies) many many miles up and down the Ouachita river behind a Pro Gator 180 with nothing more than a yoke between the two transom tie downs. It was much like to one listed above and I never got the rope in the prop. With as much drag as a tube puts on it everything is always tight and stretched out.

We used to just get pulled with a yella nylon rope tied to the transom tie-down cleat on the back of a 16’ flat, but we were poor poor. I’ve also pulled someone tied to the back seat pedestal on a bass boat, but she was hot and I didn’t want to let her down. Worked just fine that day. And night.

We did this daily back in the day, just tied the rope to the metal loops on the back of the boat.

You'll be fine

What age does the OB think kids should be to start doing this? My wife has been saying we should get a tube for the boat but I don’t feel comfortable pulling 6 year olds around on the river yet.

I was about 8-9 when I first went. Tombigbee river in west Alabama. Much prefer going on a lake or pond but if the river is wide enough there’s room for it.

I think 6 is fine. Just take it slow, and try to avoid busy/popular days and times. As they get bored with that speed and they (and you) become more comfortable, go a little faster. If you ever feel uncomfortable, just pull them back in.

I want to say my son was riding alone at 5 and with an adult at 3. He's 9 now and rarely wants to tube. Much prefers a wakeboard.

It depends on the child of course. Teach them hand signals for Ready/Stop/Slow Down, don't pull them any faster than they are comfortable and do it well away from any traffic. Teach them to raise and wave their arms when they fall off so they can be seen more easily. Young ones do well with a sit in type rather than a flat lay down tube.
