Should I go with Leopold 1.5-4x20 VX freedom or Bushnell 1-6x24 with an illuminated reticle

Leopold I assume is gonna be a little nicer quality but has a little less range and no illuminated reticle. I’m leaning with the bushnell for the reasons provided unless those scopes are total garbage. I’ve never owned one of either brand so I am unsure.

ETA: this will be going on a 16” 5.56 rifle

I would look at the vx3 1.5-5 as well. It has the fire dot duplex

Leupold and bushnell are not in the same category

Do you need an illuminated reticle? If not don’t pay for one. Nothing wrong with either scope, and things are competitive enough that a $300 Bushnell is going to be competitive with a $300 Leupold and they’re both going to be competitive with a $300 Burris or Vortex. In general, the fewer features you get (illuminated reticle, 8x mag range), the nicer the glass will be for the same money. Pick a price point and get only the features you need and you’ll end up with a decent product.

LPVO's with illuminated reticles give you the best of all worlds and get the maximum capability out of an AR. At lowest power , illuminated, it acts like a red dot and significantly improves your ability to shoot at night when most bad things come out to play. Crank it up to maximum magnification and you can reach out and touch something at longer ranges in daylight.

only negatives over a red dot sight are :
1) weight
2) battery life

get a few CR2032 batteries and put inside the compartment in the handle and you greatly solve that problem.

There are LPVO's that go 1-4, 1-6, 1-8 and 1-10.

I would go at least 1-6 and illuminated.

so for the $300, I would choose the Bushnell for the above reasons.

Other choices to look at are Vortex and Primary Arms. Both have good units in the price range you are looking at.

I have a PA with the ACSS reticle on a 300BO build and have several Vortex scopes as well as my leupold freedom 3-9x40mm on my Grendel hog rifle. They all work great for me but I'm not snobby about the picture, I still watch standard definition TV.

I have three Swampfox LPVOs and I love them. A 1-6 on my 10.5, a 1-6 on my DD, and a 1-8 on my LaRue. Crystal Clear glass and I love the turrets. The lifetime guarantee is nice too... well, the 50K round guarantee, but it clearly states on their website that it's pretty much a lifetime guarantee. I think I read somewhere that the guy that founded Swampfox, Chris Cox, used to be a higher-up at Primary Arms? I could be wrong though. Entirely possible.

LPVO love them, love them not I have done this more than I would like to admit.

First you do you! find whatever you "have to have" and go for it!

Providing I can add anything to the subject, please consider weight. Most LVPO's are whales the reason have currently abandoned the LVPO scopes "again" at least for now.

And 17 ounces. Trade off I think is a little tighter eye box, but super compact clear optic

Just ordered a 1-10 for my 300 blackout for pig hunting. They have a 30% military discount. Hopefully it's a good choice, still not cheap.
