Didn’t think this belonged on the OT, thought I’d try here.
I may end up having to replace or rebuild my transmission. Other than the price difference, is there an upside to rebuilds? Replacement Carrie’s a nice warranty.
I guess the question is, after rebuilding a transmission have you had any issues?

18’ Chevy 4x4, 77k miles.

I am under the impression they just swap it with one that was rebuilt. Unless you are talking about getting a new Chevy one. Sucks you need to do this on a new truck.

Get a GM factory remanufactured transmission. They will replace every part. A rebuilt transmission usually only fixes the parts that are broken. Gm gives a 36000 mile warranty. Put one in a 02 Silverado and it was about $1700.

My 16 Silverado went out due to crappy torque converter gm used. This is according to every shop I called. From what I understand that issue was corrected by 2018 with the 8 speed transmission but the fluid they used can’t handle the heat of the 8 speed. A buddy of mine has the same truck and I believe the dealership upgraded the fluid at no charge.

Btw, the dealership wanted around $5200 to replace mine and offered a lifetime warranty. I asked why the original didn’t have the same warranty and got crickets. I wound up having it done at a local shop for $3500 and they used a better torque converter. The Chevy dealership was going to put the same pos back in there.

All I can offer is that I put a GM remanufactured transmission in my old truck and its been great. The old one had over 250k very hard miles on it though. At only 77k I wouldn't be putting another one of those in without knowing I was getting an improved part.

Generally no, but the price difference can be very significant. I wouldnt hesitate to have a very reputable shop rebuild it. I couldn't rebuild mine because the case was split.

This is what I heard from a mechanic recently:

All of the major rebuilders are sucking up the good transmission parts from US and Germany. The smaller shops are using $hitty Chinese parts.

Remanufactured from the majors usually have a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. I replaced a Ford trans at 120k and ran the reman for 170K with no issues.

Thanks for the input folks. I’m holding hope it’s just something relatively insignificant, but I like to plan for the worst.

I just did mine, 5k for a rebuild on a 2016 with 100k

FYI all GM owners need to get the new bypass valve installed, lowers transmission temp from 200ish to 145.

A shop in Houston, was there for work, now I am worried about the parts they used. They are a decent size business though with 20+ shops. It was like 4600ish to be approximate.

My dads 2018 had issues and the dealership did multiple flushes and changed the type of fluid...so far so good.

It is a known problem. I believe there is a service bulletin about it.

6 SPEED OR 8 SPEED?

6L80 are junk. Most tranny shops won't rebuild them, you will get quoted for reman product which is a slippery slope unless you verify the builder. Let me know and I can tell you about the builder.

8L90 have been doing well for GM compared to the 6 speed.

I reprogram most installs in our area, and we've seen a ton.

I have a 2017 Silverado, 130,000 miles. Just replaced the transmission with a rebuild not from dealer, about a month ago. I'm getting 2-3 mpg less with the rebuild. Thoughts on why this would be happening? TIA

Is your Speedo accurate? Is it locking the torque converter when it’s supposed to? Are the gear ratios the same?

Take to a good shop and get them to check serial data between tranny valve body and ABS/Speed sensors. If not, rebuild may have a beefier, heavier TC. Which is worth 2-3 mpg drop.

Got a call the other day from the dealership. They said the transmission issue was from the PCM. I get the pcm is the brain, but I do t see how it correlates to the slipping. That’s not to I can’t believe it, but I don’t understand it.
That sound legit?

My AC was going out too
