I just got my boat totaled out by my insurance company after Hurricane Barry. They waived their rights to collect the boat. They told me I could keep it, sell it or do what ever I wanted with it. I’m getting more money for the boat that what I paid for it so that’s good. The only problem is that I have no idea what to do with the boat now. There’s pretty good damage to the hull. My father in law and I managed to center it back on the trailer but broke the axle on the trailer in the process. Does anyone on the OB have any idea what I can do with this? Here’s a link for some pics of the damage.

If that’s the only hull damage, that won’t be bad to have fixed at all. There are many places that do that kind of work. Not sure if the motor has water damage, but sounds like even if it does, you could repower with the money and still have some left over after hull repairs to upgrade electronics.

It’s in Montegut. It’s a ‘95 16’ Procraft. We got the batteries to charge enough to lower the engine so we could take the cover off. There was no water inside the cover so I think it’s ok. I use the boat maybe once a year. So it’s not something I’m really attached to.

Put a new axle on the trailer and bring it to a fiberglass guy

Trailer axles are easy to replace. I actually just replaced one of the two on my trailer this morning. Took about two hours total. Axle, hubs, brakes.

Take it to a repair guy. Then either repower or sell.

why the hell you didnt drive down there and move it to your house?

ya its great you got full value for it but

as to what to do with it, just sell it as-is for $1k

thats the best thing to do with it, the boat may be trashed but the trailer and motor, even in that damaged condition, should sell quick for $1k

that boat looks like it could be repaired if someone had the time and energy to do the repairs themself, not sure if its worth it if you had to pay a shop to do it though.

if that picture is the only damage then i think a shop might could easily make it like new again for a few hundred dollars to $1k depending on how much damage there is

replacement axle is a couple hundred plus labor and bring it to a boat shop to have the motor fully serviced and all fluids changed and i doubt that would run you over $500

so option "A" sell it as is for $1k and your done

option "B" spend the money to fix it and repair the hull for most likely under $2k total

if as you say you might use it only once a year then i would keep the insurance check, fix up the boat/motor/trailer and then sell it for $4-$5k and pocket that, then just go on a charter the few times you want to go fish and never again worry about boat maint issues

there is money to be made fixing up that boat, the only question is do you want to invest time and money into doing it or do you just want to sell it as-is and let someone else invest their time and money to make a few dollars or just get a nice boat after.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll plan on changing the axle when I go back down and then trying to sell it. It is a 90 Mariner.

My father in law lives close by their camp. I asked him if I should get it or not. He said it would be fine and he didn’t think I should move it. It’s about a 1.5 hour drive for me so it’s a little ways away. I also don’t have a place to store it at my house.

Unless you have time to kill, I think I’d personally replace the axle so someone can drive it away then sell it as is. If you try to fix it to sell it it will likely be twice as expensive and twice as long as you think, and you still have a boat with a significant fiberglass repair.

Likely not worth repairing. I would cut bait and take it to a junkyard.

So do you only use the camp once a year too? You should sell the camp to me...

I sent you a message.

My father in law has a flat bottom boat that we use 90% of the time. If the water was high then we would use my boat or would use it to knee board. I honestly didn’t need the boat when I got it. One of my in laws wanted to get rid of it and made me a good deal. We didn’t have kids at the time and were going down once a month. Now it’s maybe twice a year. My in laws still go a good bit but they’re retired and go during the week.

I know how to fix the engine if submerged. They sink my seine boat all the time on the farm I just change the oil take off the intake and injectors and turn the engine over blow the water out. Change plugs.

There are places you can get fiberglass repair done.

If you’re not interested in doing the work I might would come look at the boat and buy it off you cheap and I’ll fix it up ive been wanting a fishing boat. Post a throwaway email if interested and I’ll contact you
