We choose pockets that has a defined creek or ditch running into it. The ones without a defined creek hold fish too, but the pockets with defined ditches seem to hold more fish. The ditches and creeks funnels fish into them.

Hey all, wife and I are discussing a trip for Mardi Gras with friends. It’s been who knows how long since I’ve been to Toledo Bend. More of a get away trip but would like to do some fishing- maybe a guide- for sacalait. Any recommendations on which part of the lake to go is appreciated. Airbnb or VRBO. We are in Youngsville. Thanks!

If you are coming around Mardi Gras, I’d suggest staying around north Toledo bend state park. We usually fish the river up around Huxley down to San Miguel that time of year. According to the weather we may be in the river fishing standing timber it could be in the pockets throwing corks. Give me a holler if we can help. Bent Rods Guide Service

Looking back on all the outdoor shite I have done, I'd struggle to find something I enjoy more than this.

I’m a bass fisherman at heart, but man watching that cork go under is hard to beat!

That and a road runner over deep grass. That singular low frequency thump. Indian Creek should be on fire this year.

March is the month to catch them by the docks. By May when I go every year they have moved out to the deep brush piles.

When there was grass around the La. Islands and the last stretch of bank by the dam on the Tx. side, I would have 100 fish days on a jig on Memorial Day weekend. Once the grass left, I could not catch a single fish. I miss those trips big time. Even the stroller boats disappeared.

During the spring I always keep a 5' ultra light spinning rod on the deck with a cork and jig. (Usually a Bobby Garland monkey milk)

I throw it at docks with obvious brush sticking up and natural laydowns on the bank when it "looks right".

I'll catch a few here and there, but I haven't hammered them in a long time. I'm starting to feel like I waste too much time doing that when I should be strictly bass fishing. With my electronics and new trolling motor, it's easier now it seems to bass fish in the peak of spring and mess with white perch out deep the rest of the year.

I've caught some nice bass on that little rig too.

Do you ever use crappie nibbles?

When I was first introduced to the "Popping cork" method, a crappie nibble on the hook was a must. I haven't used any in years and I'm wondering if I need to try them again.

My problem is I can't suppress my inner Pierre part coonass and I end up beating the banks and cuts and downed timber and stuff. I suck at fishing there.

I am almost never within 100 yards of the bank, and most of the time much farther. The under cork time is the only bank beating I do anymore. So many rolling ridges out where you aren't walking from boat to boat.

I see people doing that, and try to do it myself. I have a great map card with accurate topology of the whole lake. I mark structure and fish all over the place. Can't make them bite and I end up in some cove throwing red shad worms at tree tops and deciding I should just stick to riding the kids around and swimming / tubing.

This year's gonna be my year though. I'll be there in March. Last time I fished there it was August and the surface temp was 98 degrees.

If you see a big arse bay boat out there with rods sticking up out of the console and leaning post and start wondering wtf are those speck fishermen doing, don't bother going over there. It's me, and I have no idea wtf I am doing.

I had a Nautic Star 1900 for many years over there. It was more "family friendly" for when we were doing family boating stuff.

Can we request a specific guide at Bent Rods or do I have to put in the dates and go with whoever I’m assigned? I’m learning the lake, bought a place at Indian creek last year. We often have weekend renters looking for trips and would like to meet you and book a few trips this spring.

I like my big bay boat out there a lot. It's nice to be able to go wherever I want regardless of the wind. I just look dumb tiptoeing around trying to not rip my engine off, spot locking in the middle of the lake not catching anything, etc.
