I'm picking up a Mossberg 590 Shockwave in 20ga today, more so because I've just been itching to get a pistol grip shotgun rather than needing it for self defense. I went with the Mossberg over the Remmington 870 mainly for capacity and I preferred the look of the Raptor pistol grip that comes on the Mossberg.

Now, I know the board has a difference of opinion on home defense weapons, but I was curious about those of you who do have a tactical style shotgun that is your main line of defense for your home. Why did you choose that over a handgun, or rifle?

Others who do not like the idea of using a shotgun for home defense please chime in, too. I have pretty much any option for a handgun (currently my home defense), AR style rifle, and hunting shotguns, but this option I never had so I decided to scratch that itch.

Shotguns are great for home defense. Personally not a fan of the pistol grip only shotguns tho. Give me one with a stock and and pistol grip if you prefer.

I have a Benelli M4 and it's awesome. Forget how many rounds of buckshot it holds but it's a very good home defense gun.

That being said, I'd grab my AR with silencer and light every single time over the shotgun.

30 rounds are greater than 6 or 7.

in no particular order (all with std. stocks / no pistol grip):

Mossberg 590 (std. or A1)
Remington 870 Tactical
Mossberg 930 / 940 Tactical
Benelli M4
Beretta 1301
Berretta A300

Why the head shake, Finch?

Edit: I already have an A300 and Benelli Nova in 12ga.

I'm asking in seriousness not trying to be an arse...

I'm a huge proponent of a shotgun for home defense, IMO for me WAY better than an AR or pistol... Why a tactical? Why not just a regular shotgun with a snow goose extension? Is there an advantage other than staying it's "Tactical"?

Well, like I said in the OP, I'm not necessarily getting it for home defense. I'm getting it because I want it. I already have two regular 12ga hunting shotguns. If I'm being completely honest, I've watched a few tv series lately, and they have sawed offs or tactical style shotguns, and they made me want one. I never claimed it was a practical reason

And you had to ask what the head shake was for

Take that thing to the range and put a few boxes of shells through it and report back.

Don't get the wrong idea about me, I know my way around a firearm. Haven't you ever bought a particular gun just because you wanted it? Because if we are being honest, if I only bought the guns I needed, my gun safe would look a lot different than it does now.

ETA: I've been handling shotguns in particular, for about 30 years now. I'm well aware how they work.

I haven't needed much of anything for the past 20yrs.

I have wanted a lot and have bought most of the things i have in the last 20yrs because I wanted it.

I bought an SP5 last year, my mom asked me a bit exasperatedly why I need something like that.

My response was, I don't need anything. I wanted it so I bought it.

I wouldn't want a long barrel hunting shotgun. Just awkward to walk around a house with. Plus I believe buckshot patterns better in shorter barrels since it's doesn't bounce around as much. Not saying it's got to be tacticool, but my duck hunting 12 ga isn't what I'm reaching for over my handgun.

I use a Mossberg tactical shotgun for home defense and I like it. I don't really do much too much hunting with shotguns, and it's not really something I would use to hunt with anyways.

But with an 18.5 inch barrel it's pretty easy to move around in the house and it's not bulky at all.

As for pistols/rifles instead of a shotgun, I still keep a pistol bedside for just incase. But if I'm in a life or death situation, I'm gonna grab the 12 guage and put a cavity in someone rather than "poke holes" with a 9mm.

The 18.5" 12 gauge is next to my wife'side of the bed. She can shoot it well and is better with it than a handgun. Loaded up with Federal #1 flight control buckshot.

I keep the other stuff next to my side and on my nightstand.

I dont have any kind of idea about you. Don’t get defensive. You started the thread and raised the question. It’s all in good sport and humor.

In all seriousness the pistol grip shotguns are a “cool” toy but I wouldn’t likely reach for one in a life threatening situation if I had other options. I would prefer something more comfortable to shoot multiple shots and the ability to have little more range in case the situation evolved to require it. But it is a cool gun to own and no doubt devastating firepower at close range.

I have a vepr 12 behind the bed frame on a magnet mount.

Why?

Because whoever breaks in will be meeting their diety. 10/10+1. That's almost 600 .24 projectiles.

I put a shell tube ext on my binelli nova.

I think it’s tactical now.

Didn't mean to sound defensive, just didn't want you to think that I saw it on TV and said yep that's what I should get as my first gun

I've never shot a pistol grip, so whether or not I will be leaving it next to the bed for self defense has yet to be decided. That said, I will never NOT have one on my 9mm's in my night stand drawer. I'm always going to be more comfortable shooting a 9mm than probably anything else just purely based on experience with them compared to other firearms besides the ones I use for hunting.
