My daughter used a 25-06 at age 10. Great round for deer. My grand daughter is using a 308 at age 10. Grand sons are using 7mm 08 and they are 9 and 10. The 25-06 does have a little more recoil in my opinion. I would consider the 7mm08 for women and kids and stay away from the reduced recoil ammo.

What's wrong with reduced recoil ammo for the 7mm-08

We’ve found that it doesn’t provide exit wounds making trailing difficult. This has happened 5 times with us. We switched to the regular ammo and no problems since.

Same here.

No .30-30 suggestions? I started on that and still love that gun to this day.

What bullets were you using for reduced loads and what are you using now.
Lost a deer this past weekend with reduced loads. It was my son's first, which made it worse. Not the best shot, but felt like it was good enough to kill the deer. Shoulder shot, no pass through.

Another one that will work fine if that's what you've already got. If you're going out and buying a rifle though there are better options.

We were using Hornsby SST 120 custom lite. We are now using Federal Fusion 140. Boys have taken 3 deer with no issues.

Im about to get a 7mm 08 for my 10 yr old. Bought him a Rossi 243 I was able to get super cheap. That thing kicks worse than my 45-70

Exact Same. Also, I cannot tell the difference in recoil.

I've bowhunted my whole life, and barely do any deer hunting at all anymore. But, my dad felt the need to buy me a deer rifle a few years ago, and he got it in 25-06. I've only shot paper with it, but I did a lot of reading on the round when I got it. It's a very versatile cartridge and accurate. It can be used from varmints all the way up to elk, depending on the bullet.
I know everybody has their favorites, but I think the 25-06 is probably pretty underrated.

I actually went back to that last year. Never even took my 308 out of the safe. Love that old lever gun. Made hunting fun again.

One thing that gets overlooked and causes a lot of kids to be affected by recoil is poor shooting form.
Shoot correctly and you don’t get ringed and recoil is not an issue That is why I cringe when I see tiny kids shooting. They can’t even pick up the gun much less shoulder it correctly. My son is strong as a baby bull and couldn’t do it absolutely correctly until he was 9 with a rest. At 10 he is becoming proficient.
I like the shorter actions for the kids. .243, .7-08, 308. I would stick to those for flexibility, usefulness and availability of ammo

recoil and noise of a 30-06 with the knock down power of a 243 Not my favorite round.
This is utter bullshite. The recoil is very light. There are recoil tables you can find on the internet. The 25/06 with a 120 grain round has a recoil energy is 12lbs and the recoil velocity is 10mph. The recoil energy of a 150 grain 30/06 is 17.6 and recoil velocity of 12. Those are enormous differences in felt recoil. Especially for a junior.
Regarding the capability of the round, I have a 26-06 weatherby vanguard. I’ve killed 2 deer with it. One dropped in its tracks, one ran 10 yards and dropped. Both of their vitals were liquefied. I shot a bobcat with it that was walking away from me. The round entered just left of its bung hole and blew out its entire abdomen. Unless you’re shooting over 300 yards on the reg, the 25/06 is all the round anyone needs for whitetail.
If you want a bigger round, get one. But anyone who says the caliber isn’t sufficient to reliably take deer is woefully uninformed.

Both my sons started killing deer with a 7mm-08 at the age of five. I ran custom loaded 120gr Sierra pro hunters out of them which were very effective. We now shoot two 25-06’s running custom loaded 80gr Barnes ttsx out of them at 3500fps. They have killed six bucks over 200lbs the last two years and countless does with this round. Both of my sons say the recoil is half of the 7mm08. The 25-06 blows the 7mm-08 out of the water with its performance. The blood trails are unreal and the wound channels are devastating. Lots of people I know have switched to this round for youths and personal use once I show them the results they produce. Also put jewel triggers in all of these guns which is a must for a kid to shoot.

The .25-06 comes in a long action due to cartridge length. A short action rifle (.243, .260, 7mm-08, .308) will fit them better and be easier to handle.
That said, the .25-06 is an outstanding Southern whitetail round. Mild recoil and flat shooting. What’s not to like. I shoot a 257 WBY, which is essentially a 25-06 plus 10%. A fast 25 caliber will do amazing things.

Wrong
It is a great round. I've killed dozens of deer with mine. Favorite rifle, and not even close.
But, for a youth, I'd go with the 7-08.

It will kill the absolute shite out of a deer. Same as all the other calibers mentioned in here.
