Thoughts on 25-06 as a youth gun?

How is the recoil for those who have shot it? Can a 10 year old, average size, handle it?
Seems like a great round that could be used into adulthood for deer and pigs.

dont know how it could be any better than the 7mm-08

seems good, but I've never shot one.
The OB consensus for youth rifles seem to be in no particular order:
7mm08
25 06
6.5
.243

My 10 year old has been shooting a 7mm-08 with 140 gr bullets for about 3 years and doesn't complain about recoil.
She's a smaller than average girl too. I don't think a 25-06 would be an issue.
One thing that gets overlooked and causes a lot of kids to be affected by recoil is poor shooting form. Good form results in less recoil noticed. I never let my kids shoot with scopes until it was time to practice for deer hunting. Learning to shoot with open sights makes them learn better form in my opinion.

So dam loud for a youth gun with that small of a round. Scare off the whole parish. If your going to have a bang. Have a bang with some serious know down power. My 9 year old girl shoots a Savage Compact (Youth model) with a 6.5mm creedmore and love is.
Its how you teach them. Take them to the range slowly introduce them to it and they will get comfortable with it. Don't just throw them out there in the stand.

I don't like it. Just doesn't make sense to use a necked down '06 to .25 for deer. Something in the .308 family makes more sense to me.

recoil and noise of a 30-06 with the knock down power of a 243 Not my favorite round.
7mm-08 for the win
7mm-08 for the win

Nothing wrong with the round. Does it come in a compact version? At that age, Length of Pull and comfort will go much further in developing good shooting form than low recoil.
My son started with a compact 308 5 or 6 years ago. He loves that rifle. He's almost 16 and over 6' tall now and won't get rid of it. I've offered to buy him a full size rifle or even a new stock and he says no. He likes his gun too much. We just put a slip on recoil pad on it to add to the LOP and he keeps dropping deer with it.

Don’t overlook a 260.
My son started with one yrs ago and it’s great.
But, bottom line, 7mm 08 checks all the boxes. Easy enough to handle, ammo options available in box stores, lotsa rifles around, etc.

Great deer rifle. I have a cousin who has killed at least 20 deer with one. Now his son uses it; and has used it since he was 9 or 10.

I agree on the recoil and noise, but you may want to check your bullet if you think it only has the knock down power of a .243. I've shot one for 10 years and never had an issue.

People shoot .243 all the time. Doesn't mean there aren't 80 better options for whitetails.

I see 0 reason to shoot a 25-06 over a .308 or 7mm08. My daughter is 11 and is pretty small and has been shooting a .308 since she was 9 and no complaints of recoil. We've gone the .243 route and I know many love it but im just not a fan at all. I find the .243 is a better round for experienced shooters and not kids that aren't as accurate as adults and do and will make mistakes. It just doesn't leave much room for error. 25-06 is not a bad round but why shoot a caliber where bullets aren't found at every local store? Anyone who carries any type of ammo will have 7mm08 or .308 on hand. Not always the case with a 25-06. For a kid the Ruger American Compact is a very affordable gun and very accurate.

Except for all the rounds that have 15-25% or more energy, similar (+/- 1") trajectory up to 200 yards, and actually exit deer on a routine basis, I agree with you.

7mm08 is a much better option for kids.
I had a 25/06 for a while. Killed a few deer with it and wasnt impressed. If I had one already I'd use it, but if I was going buy a rifle I'd get a 7mm08. I had lots of bullets come apart and fail to exit.

Sounds like a bullet problem, not a gun problem.

Yes, 25-06 is a fast lightweight caliber and at close to mid range a bone impact is going to rip apart non-premium bullets. That's what happened with mine. The only exit I got was at nearly 200 yards through the ribs. IIRC it still came out in pieces.
A caliber like 7mm08 throwing heavier bullets at modest velocity does not require premium bullets or shot placement based on range. Just aim somewhere between the neck and the middle rib and shoot. 25/06 is not as forgiving and IMO not the ideal choice for a kid.
If you already have it itll work fine, just shoot good bullets (TSX, partition, accubond, etc). If you are going buy a gun for a kid, there are better choices. Primarily 7mm08
