A friend of mine went dove hunting with her boyfriend (she watched and kept him company). He drank beer while he hunted.

I told her that I wouldn't want to be with someone handling and shooting guns while drinking. I would enjoy some post-hunt Maker's Mark (especially if it was cold), but I would be uncomfortable with drinking and guns.

Am I being too careful? My friend says I'm being too cautious.

there is a difference with drinking while hunting, and getting drunk while hunting

however, one or two beers in a 200 plus lb man are not going to cause any problems.

If I want to get drunk I can do that at the house. When I'm hunting, I'm hunting.... that's not to say I don't have a sip of the brown at night at the camp.

I've enjoyed some beers or a good mix drink during an evening hunt. I've gotten a good buzz while dove hunting.

But, What if I'm a better shot when I'm drunk?

Also, it depends what type of hunt. I have never been on a dove hunt that didn't involve drinking. Ducks, deer on the other hand I don't drink for

I drink plenty after the hunt but never during. I don't necessarily have a problem with people bringing 2 or 3 beers on the stand with them in the evenings. I don't think that should be allowed in a club, but on private land, I think the landowner has the right to drink a few while hunting if he so chooses.

So you are friend zoned and trying to ruin his game?

This. I usually don't crack a beer if the action is hot, but if 8 am rolls around and they aren't flying I will drink one for good luck. Deer hunting I rarely drink, and if I do it is in a box stand trying to shoot a doe.

Don't get loaded, obviously, but a beer or two in moderation is fine IMO.

ETA: If I am on an invited hunt, I'm not bringing booze. I only have a beer when I can control the situation. And if I don't bring a craft beer from some brewery you have never heard of, Salmon gets cranky.

I like being sober when I'm hunting. It's more relaxing.

Low powered #8s don't hurt that bad anyway.

For the last several years, I've killed more beers than doves on opening day. Still not shot anyone.

I will drink a beer or two while dove hunting. Never have while doing any other type of hunting.
