True but big deer still come out of there almost every year.

Yeah, just like Saline. Still, I've just about given up. Go there for a Tuesday depo and pull up to the lot and see 7 trucks already there. At Cocodrie, I might see 3 on a Saturday. I will say this though, when they opened the lake unit that year, it was the easiest doe hunt in the history of bow hunting.

My buddy is having the time of his live now on his fenced area. They had a biologist from LDWF come and do a census and he recommended killing 25 does and set some rules on what bucks to kill.

If I had the money, I would buy land in a huge area where proper management is being practised, such as the areas afore mentioned. There is an area from south of Tallulah down to Vidalia on the River that has been properly managed for years and years and they are reaping the benefits with 180" to a little over 200". Everyone there is in on the management. Transgressors are villified and kicked out. A fence in an area like that would keep a ton of desirable bucks OUT of your property.

I always see deer on the way to duck hunting around Saline. Saw some wall hangers and some big ole does. Best time is during a flood to bring them out of the deep woods.

You cannot expect to kill a 200 inch deer anywhere in the world with any kind of consistency.

I agree but some areas are more prone to do it than others. Delta land is gonna produce some studs year in and year out. All you have to do is check the state records to see the frequency of how many B&C bucks from Ferriday all the way up the river to the Tallulah area that have been entered. I would guess maybe every 3-5 years but that is a WAG.

I wouldn't trade our place for any other piece of land. Management is a lot of fun and very rewarding, getting to shoot big deer is also a plus

Understand. A shame what all happened. Fencing that place was just a crime.

My boss has a big high fenced place. He's got $$$$ and likes to spend it on his herd. Buys bred does with super genetics knocked up by 200" plus bucks, has a freak in there right now going to breed them this year, and is getting more bred does next year. Once he has his herd where he wants it, he's gonna pull the fence and have all loose. The rest of the ranch is a kill anything that walks.

Some places around us totally cleaned house after they put up their fence and brought in an entire new herd. We haven't brought in any outside genetics and don't plan on it. We may never get 200+" deer, but we have a few that will push 180" right now and that's alright with me.

i have no problem with high fence.. to each his own. I just dont want to do it. Just not as fun. again if deer was killed high fence, im not impressed. Ive seen as big and bigger in high fence. We have friends that have a big high fence with one bigger than that on right now. Opening weekend of gun season they are letting the owner " a woman" come and kill it. Sounds easy to me knowing she is going to kill a 280" or whatever it is opening day of gun season.
