Literally just booked a cabin for my husband and I in Blue Ridge, GA in July. I can see us ending up there. We also loved Greenville, SC after a visit a few years ago. It will depend on where our kids end up, of course, but none of us want to stay here!

As I said, I lived there for 3 years and go back 2 or 3 times a year. I can definitely give you some recommendations. Do you want to live on a mountain or live a few miles away from mountains to enjoy the view?
Living in the mountains would be my top choice, but living a few miles away wouldn't be that bad, either. My thing is I want 20-50 acres where I can wake up in the morning and sit on the porch, drink coffee, pray, enjoy the beauty of the mountains, watch the wildlife, catch up on the latest news and take a walk peacefully on some trails with my dogs. sort
I sort of like the living off the grid lifestyle where I can provide my own power using solar panels, raise a few farm animals, and find a water source, so I won't have to trek back and forth back to town.

If you're wanting to be off the grid around wildlife and want to do it on the cheap, check out the Kiamichi Mountains area in Oklahoma. Anywhere from Antlers to Honobia. Tons of hiking and ATV trails, great deer and black bear hunting. And inexpensive. Sardis Lake is a pretty good largemouth lake.
They're not mountains like the Rockies, more like the Ozarks.

I think Elijay, Chatsworth, or Blue Ridge would suit you!

Sidicous,
Pretty sure we are related. Can be no coincidence that I have an Uncle Jr that did the same thing. Jr had 2 sisters I am the youngest ones only son.

I still have a few years before I retire, but I think this might be the perfect time to purchase some land, so when I do retire, I know exactly where I will be going!
Was my first move before I retired. I bought property six years before I built my home and retired. I chose a lakefront home.
PS: When I bought the lot and started discussing with colleagues and friends, they shook their heads and said "I am not even thinking about retirement". But within two or three years, some were choosing their retirement location/homes. Within five years most had.

medical specialist. Most people do not take this into consideration when they start thinking about where they want to retire.
This.
Second is don't make it a pain on your kids to come see you or get you from where you relocate. My parents luckily planned for this after the nightmare of going to get my grandparents. They moved way down in FL, and when time came they needed care we had to move mountains to get it. Then had to haul them and all their stuff back.
Our plan is to not take any furniture, heirlooms, etc. to second home when we move. We either gonna leave in our family home or give it to kids then. We'll buy anything we need cheap and they can trash it when we need to come back.

You want to either go to Trenton Georgia or rising fawn, I pass through there every day for work. It’s beautiful out there.

Friends dad bought a huge spread there. Couldn't keep poachers or thieves out, and had multiple problems with pot growers

If any of you guys know of some small, cool little town, definitely let me know. I'm going to do my own research to see what I can find.
Not sure how small you're looking exactly, but if you find the Blue Ridge area is a little too populated/touristy for you, you might look a little further East. Dillard and Clayton come to mind.

Helen, GA is one of my favorite vacation locations. I wouldn't want to live on town, due to traffic, but love that area.

I was in Blue Ridge and Helen yesterday. My three sisters live in Woodstock, Ga.
All that area is great!

I love all those areas. I purchased a map of Georgia, so when I head to Pine Mountain for another wedding in about a month, I want to go visit at least a couple of areas in north Georgia. There are just so many beautiful areas I've come across that I think at some point, I'm going to have to narrow down a certain area and focus just on that area.

The Apple Festival in this town is the second and third weekends in October!
I was there last year, for the festival, standing on a corner. A guy yells out my name. I can't go anywhere.

Years back I camped at Black Rock Mountain state park, in Clayton. Dillard was famous for the Dillard House!

Man, I've got to disagree. Wife and I went to Helen and Elijay on vacation a few years ago. I'm all for some serenity, but that was just boring AF. Liked the mountain views, but felt so desolate.
