I’ve had a rough last 3-4 years with outdoors related incidents. In my 50s, did not grow up a country boy. New Orleans until I was 14 then Shreveport. Dad only fished and squirrel hunted but some Hs buddies got me into deer hunting at around 16. Learned to hunt public land in NW La, never had money for hunting club, even less so now. Never really had issues my first I’d say 30 years hunting. I also have 100 acres of dad’s land in NW La. He and my uncle bought a long time ago and dad eventually bought my uncle out.

3 years ago in September took my back then around 13 y/o out to scout. We even in September wore orange. Within 30 minutes someone was firing a shotgun our direction, very loud and close and I started hollering, this is public land. They fired several shots until I kept screaming and they stopped. I come to them and it’s a grown man and woman looked to be my age. They apologized and said they were just having fun shooting and didn’t realize we were there.

Fast forward the following spring I have my son and younger son at a pond in public area fishing. We see people on other side of pond go over and sit down to what I assumed was them fishing. Next thing you know we hear a rifle shooting our direction. I scream at my kids to run and I’m yelling at the people. They just waved back. Not even one month later I meet my brother to fish Loutre. We go out in boat and within 5 minutes hear a rifle shooting and hit brush behind us. We are ducking down in boat, again yelling and nothing. Few minutes later several shots. We go back to where he parked and left.

Here’s the big one. That 100 acres is my dad’s. Brother, sister and I have access but I’m the only one that hunts it. A distant elderly cousin gives a random dude permission to hunt it, a cousin that has 0 rights to the land. There is a field about 12-15 acres that dad leases for someone to get hay. 25 plus years ago dad planted about 10 persimmon trees. Last summer while we hadn’t been out there this guy goes, puts up a box stand and cuts down the trees to have a better shooting view. We finally figured out who it was and I called him. I told him to stay away, he apologized for cutting the trees down but was blown away that I was in disbelief with him putting up a box stand out there. I have no box stands fwiw, I don’t mess with the woods, only hunt climbers or fallen tree tops.

Hunting leases are getting high and many friends are getting out of them. Some known public WMAs have shut down, urban sprawl. Am I just getting old and yelling at clouds? Did 50 year olds bitch about this in 1982? Or does future look grim for our kids unless they have good money?

Eta: I no longer follow La hunting pages on FB but even they are depressing to read. Is walking a long ways in the woods now suddenly something to brag about My dad did that until he was in his early 70s. I still do it. Is bashing people for killing a small buck a thing now? Why?

Cousin would be getting his arse whipped. I had a similar incident with my land. Distant cousin asked if he could go ride his 4 wheeler. I told him yes. Well he brought 12 people out riding and shooting shite. I saw on my game camera. Showed up and told them they had 5 minutes to get their shite off my place and if they ever came back was going to big problems..

It's getting to where I only want to hunt during weekdays because weekends are crowded with nothing but jackasses who think they own everything.

And when you kill something, every baw in the parking lot wants to know the coordinates of the exact spot you shot [insert animal].

The problem is society. People suck regardless of where you go - the woods, the lake, the grocery store, church, etc.

That is frustrating. I hunt public land. Saturday, I ran into another hunter on the water and we talked several minutes. He has a lot more experience on this place than me and he shared a lot of information about what he was seeing, general areas, and pictures he had, etc. He was way more generous with information than I’d be and I’d like to approach other hunters I meet, more like him in the future. Point being there are all types of hunters out there, knuckle heads and courteous, nice folks.

You’re the prime example of why Hunter numbers are decreasing. The lack of a quality experience drives more people away from the sport than anything else.

Can you elaborate? I’ve been hunting almost 35 years for deer. Been squirrel hunting probably 45 years

I agree with you; I hunt public land in LA, MS, AR, NE and MO…way more positive encounters than negative, especially on areas that manage for quality / archery only.

If you love GOD and treat others with dignity, then you will find trips on public pretty darn good.

I agree also, I love God and treat everyone very well. I haven’t had encounters where me and another person were cussing each other out. I’ve hunted public 35 years and never issues until last few years. I love meeting people on public land

You’re obviously frustrated and I have been there; I empathize with you.

Covid nonsense and it’s rolling consequences (mental stress, isolation, more folks in the outdoors) definitely was a large precipitator to “bad manners” and selfishness being more visible.

I know you’re venting and didn’t ask for advice so I’ll just leave this for you…when you head into the woods, seek first Christ and ask Him to help you show mercy and understanding to those made in His image, especially those who don’t show it back.

God bless you brother.

I’ve hunted public land all my life in LA. From my experience, it’s better than ever.

We used to go a full season and maybe see 5 deer. Now we see 5 deer per hunt on average.

We still have dipshits here and there, but that has always been the case.

Private leases seem to have become too much bickering over rules and whatnot for me to really consider getting back into a lease, unless it’s only family.

Somewhere along the way it changed.

We went from an outdoor experience that focused on fellowship, family and friends, to one focused on photographs, social media and hashtags. We went from the experience of simply being in camp being enough, to the quality of the experience being dependent on how many we killed, or what we killed.

We went from large hunting clubs with hundreds of members and thousands of acres to roam to small leases, isolated from our fellow hunters.

We went from being happy with that spike or fork horn to making fun of those who killed a spike or fork horn.

We went from all being dog hunters, pursuing deer with an old shotgun or rifle to still hunters, bow hunters, crossbow hunters, rifle hunters, shotgun hunters, TSS users, surface drive users, mojo users, high fence hunters, predator hunters, waterfowl hunters, turkey hunters, deer hunters, Sitka guys, Mossy Oak guys, Realtree, guys. We segregated ourselves away from each other based on method and gear, almost as if we were looking for reasons to dislike one another and how we chose to hunt.

We now have 10 year olds killing World Slams and 160" deer, the same 10 year olds who've never once dove, rabbit or squirrel hunted. The same 10 year olds who've never once hunted public ground or learned that not everyone has the same opportunities when it comes to hunting.

We've been brainwashed by outdoor television to believe that the quality of our hunting experience is dependent on killing, not fellowship. Not family. Not friends.

Sorry for the rant.

I think atvs changed the game and got us to where we are today. Jap payback for nuking them maybe.

And what you mention about the different types of hunters is a symptom of the industry.

They use the animals to sell products.

I guess Fred Bear was doing the same with his old videos, too.

So maybe film started the ball rolling.

Hunting numbers will continue to decline due to hunter safety course requirements.

I think video games and smartphones are a detriment to getting kids out in the woods and in deer stands.
My grandsons are obsessed with that shite. They don’t want to go sit in the woods, they want to sit in the house and play video games.

I started out hunting by myself when I was 11,hunting squirrels because that was about all there was.I spent many an hour sitting under a tree hoping a squirrel would come out.Did a whole of thinking about all sorts of things, just sitting there.
My grandsons can’t last 5 minutes without their IPads or smartphones.

Bugs the crap out of me but nothing I can do about it,my wife and their parents aren’t concerned ,in fact. they’re just as bad.
